Wolverines to Battle No. 11 Terrapins for Tourney Championship Spot – University of Michigan Athletics

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The No. 22nd-ranked and third-seeded University of Michigan men’s basketball team (23-9, 14-6 Big Ten) will take on No. 11-ranked and second seed Maryland (25-7, 14-6 Big Ten) on Saturday (March 15) at 3:30 p.m. for a spot in the Big Ten Tournament championship game. The Wolverines and Terrapins will square off in the second semifinal game from Gainbridge Fieldhouse. The contest will air on CBS with Ian Eagle, Grant Hill, Bill Raftery and Tracy Wolfson on the call.

Notes

• The Wolverines shot 65.4 percent in the second half and held sixth seed Purdue to 33.3 percent to fuel an 86-68 win over the No. 20-ranked Boilermakers in a Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal.

• U-M is making its 11th trip to the Big Ten Tournament semifinal (5-5). The last advancement was during the 2021 tournament vs. Ohio State (L, 68-67).

• In the quarterfinal win, Danny Wolf led the way with 19 points, 11 rebounds and six assists, converting 7-of-10 from the field and 2-for-4 from long range. Vladislav Goldin added 15 points and eight rebounds. Tre Donaldson scored 13 and dished out five assists. Roddy Gayle Jr. added 11 points and four rebounds. U-M had 25 assists in the game as four Wolverines dished five-plus: Wolf (6), Donaldson (5), Gayle (5) and L.J. Cason (5; career best).

• U-M has a 30-23 record at the Big Ten Tournament. The Wolverines have won three titles (1998*, 2017 and 2018), including winning as the lowest seed (No. 8 in 2017).

• U-M won four games in four days, twice to win back-to-back titles (2017, ’18). The Wolverines hold the record for consecutive wins at 10 (2017-19)

• Michigan earned the No. 3 seed after tying with Maryland for the runner-up spot (14-6) but lost the tiebreaker due to the Terrapins’ 71-65 regular-season win at Crisler Center. Michigan State secured the No. 1 seed after winning the league by three games (17-3), while UCLA (13-7) claimed the No. 4 seed.

• Michigan secured a double-bye for the third time. U-M had a double-bye in 2019 (runner-up), 2021 (quarterfinal) and now 2025. The Wolverines have 15 single byes.

• Goldin earned a spot on the Big Ten’s first team from media voting and a second-team spot from the coaches. Wolf was named to the second team by both the coaches and the media. In addition to their conference accomplishments, U-M’s “Area 50-1” was honored by the Associated Press — with Wolf earning a spot on the All-Big Ten first team, while Goldin was named to the second team.
