Payton Pritchard’s historic performance in a win over the Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday night netted him several new personal marks and an all-time Boston Celtics record.
Pritchard came off the bench to pour in a career-high 43 points as he and Derrick White, who dropped in 41, became the first Celtics duo to both score at least 40 points in the same game.
But there was one Celtics record Pritchard had well within his sight line, but he came up just short of setting.
Pritchard knocked down 10 3-pointers, which was one shy of tying Marcus Smart for the franchise mark. Pritchard needed only one more triple to gain a share of the record entering the fourth quarter, but backed off his pursuit of etching his name further into the Celtics record book. Pritchard played all 12 minutes of the fourth quarter, but only took one shot beyond the arc.
“I didn’t even know I had 10 threes at the moment,” Pritchard told reporters, per NBC Sports Boston. “But I wouldn’t have gunned for it anyways because then it just sets a new standard. So, I got something to eventually go for it and hopefully I’ll break one day.”

Pritchard had the right mindset in the fourth quarter amid his career night as the Trail Blazers cut a double-digit deficit down to eight with about two minutes left.
Pritchard put the team above himself at that moment.

“The biggest thing was just about getting the W. They made a little push, so I wasn’t going to force a look that wasn’t there,” Pritchard said. “I feel like that’s disrespectful to the game, disrespectful to my teammates. But if I got in the flow and I took a shot that was a good shot for us and it broke it that way, then that’s the right way to break it.”
Maybe next time for Pritchard.
