UPMC Memorial shooting: Possible motive identified for shooting

WEST MANCHESTER TOWNSHIP, Pa. (WHTM) – Officials are investigating a possible motive that led to a man entering the UPMC Memorial Hospital ICU where several staff members were shot and taken hostage on Saturday.

ABC News reports that Diogenes Archangel-Ortiz, the man who entered the ICU armed with a semi-automatic handgun and zip ties, “was upset over what he perceived was a lack of care for a family member who had just been in the hospital’s ICU.”

The report, citing a senior law enforcement official briefed on the investigation, adds that the family member was terminal and died within the last week.

One doctor in the ICU sustained a graze wound while a nurse and custodian were treated for gunshot wounds. Three responding officers were shot, including West York Borough officer Andrew Duarte who passed away on Saturday.

Duarte died days after his 30th birthday, according to the York County Coroner’s office.

The five others who were shot are expected to recover. Archangel-Ortiz was killed during a shootout with police inside the hospital.

UPMC Memorial Hospital remains closed to visitors at this time. Governor Josh Shapiro ordered flags be lowered to half-staff until Duarte’s internment.
