Trade Price Tumbles for Seahawks Star WR DK Metcalf

The Seattle Seahawks have reduced their asking price for star wide receiver DK Metcalf, just days after first revealing that they would consider trading him. The Pittsburgh Steelers have already been contact with the Seahawks regarding Metcalf, according to multiple Steelers Now sources.

According to a report by Dianna Russini of The Athletic, the Seahawks would now take a second-round pick for Metcalf. The originally reported asking price was a first-round pick and and third-round pick — a precipitous drop in just a few days.

Likely a part of the rationale for such a price slashing is the fact that the Seahawks also traded quarterback Geno Smith in the interim, essentially ending hope that the team that finished 10-7 and tied for first place in the NFC West will be entering serious competition in 2025. Seattle also previously released wide receiver Tyler Lockett and appears to be in full fire-sale mode

In addition to the trade with Seattle, an acquiring team will also have to give Metcalf a new contract, and he is reportedly seeking a deal in the $30 million per year range, similar to the one the Pittsburgh Steelers were prepared to give Brandon Aiyuk last offseason.

Metcalf is reportedly looking to play for a contender, and wants a stable quarterback situation and warm weather — three boxes that the Steelers can at best hope to check one of. But it’s not clear how much the Seahawks will weigh Metcalf’s desires when working out a deal to trade him, and how picky he truly will want to be as long as there is a deal on the table that will get him out of Seattle.

The Steelers have a large need at wide receiver, with only George Pickens and Calvin Austin III set to return from last year’s group, along with Roman Wilson, who missed almost all of 2024 with injury.

There are several other options for the Steelers in the trade and free agent market, including Lockett, Davante Adams, Courtland Sutton, Darius Slayton and Cooper Kupp.

The Steelers may want to tackle their quarterback situation before addressing wide receiver, especially because Lockett, Metcalf and Sutton all previously played with Russell Wilson, and the Steelers could be a more attractive destination for those players if Wilson re-signs.
