“The Substance” won the Oscar for makeup and hairstyling for skin-crawling looks that brought the surreal Hollywood horror satire to life.
In the drama about an illicit drug that creates younger versions of older people, a faded celebrity-turned-aerobics instructor (Demi Moore as Elisabeth Sparkle) births her younger self through a split in her back. Her body becomes more and more grotesque as she fights to remain young. Moore is fitted with prosthetics to look like a monster, reminiscent of Gollum in “The Lord of the Rings.” By the end of the film, Moore’s character has devolved into a pile of goo slurping across her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
