Todd Golden knew Florida needed to take advantage of playing the No. 1 team in the country in The Swamp on Tuesday night.
“Coming into our place, we just have to dictate (the game),” the Florida head coach said on Monday. “I’m just looking forward to having No. 1 in here tomorrow night.”
No. 8 Florida did more than just dictate the basketball game. It embarrassed the only remaining undefeated team in college basketball, blowing out the Volunteers to hand them their first loss of the season, 73-43.
Tennessee shot a season-low 21% (12-of-56) from the floor to score its fewest points in a game during the Rick Barnes era. The previous low came in a 46-43 win over Auburn on Feb. 4, 2023. UT made four of its 29 three-point attempts to finish the night shooting 14% from distance.
Chaz Lanier and Zakai Zeigler were the only Vol to finish in double figures with 10 points, while Florida had three players do so. The Gators were led by 18 points from Denzel Aberdeen despite their leading-scorer entering the night, Walter Clayton Jr., finishing with seven points on 3-of-10 shooting. Alijah Martin added 13 points and Alex Condon secured a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
Here are our takeaways from Tennessee’s (14-1, 1-1 SEC) loss to Florida (14-1, 1-1 SEC) in its first conference road game of the season.
These takeaways will continue to be updated throughout postgame.
