Spoiler alert for season two finale of Severance
After weeks of fan theories, Severance ended its second season with a twist that left viewers stunned.
Actress Dichen Lachman, who plays Gemma, spoke with JOE about the finale’s emotional impact and what might come next. In the episode titled Cold Harbor, the two sides of Mark’s split personality finally communicate through video recordings. His work self (“Innie Mark”) and outside self (“Outie Mark”), both played by Adam Scott, face a life-changing decision.
Despite initial doubts, Innie Mark agrees to risk everything, including his new romance with Helly (Britt Lower), to help rescue Outie Mark’s wife Gemma from the mysterious company Lumon. The rescue plan initially seems successful when Outie Mark and Gemma briefly reunite.

In the final moments, Innie Mark makes a shocking choice, staying at Lumon with Helly instead of escaping with Gemma. The finale ends with Gemma screaming in panic as Innie Mark and Helly run through Lumon’s hallways, mirroring the season opener.
Season 3 has been confirmed already.
Lachman offered her take on Gemma’s final scene: “I think that Gemma is just piecing it together. Initially, she doesn’t understand why he’s not coming out. I think that when she sees him turn away from her, the further he gets, it dawns on her that he has undergone this procedure himself.”
“She’s just trying to reach out to him, [as if] maybe just screaming his name loud enough either convinces his innie [to come back] or breaks through some barrier and reaches his outie,” Lachman explained.
When asked if Gemma might connect Mark’s abandonment with Dr. Mauer’s earlier lie about Mark having remarried, Lachman revealed she hadn’t considered that possibility.
“Oh wow. That’s so interesting. I didn’t think of it that way, because I guess internally I made the choice not to believe [Dr Mauer],” Lachman said. “But you’re so right because if I had made the choice the other way, that could have totally been interpreted that way.”
The interviewer expressed concern for Gemma, wondering if misunderstanding Mark’s actions might push her character toward villainy.
“You never know! I mean, it is open to interpretation,” Lachman responded. “I love that that’s what you got out of it, that’s awesome. I mean, not that you felt sad but that you had a different interpretation to me. That’s really cool.”
Apple TV+ recently confirmed Severance will return for a third season. Lachman hopes the new episodes will explore how Gemma processes Mark’s decision.
“Yeah, I would hope we get to explore that more,” she told JOE, “I feel the fans have a lot of questions and, [creator Dan Erickson’s] very aware of all the little things that people talk about online. He’s really good like that. He’s very engaged.”
Lachman praised the show’s creator: “[Dan’s] so brilliant. So, I’m also excited to just see what he comes up with and not put too many expectations on what he has going on and just go along for the ride.”
Seasons 1 and 2 of Severance are available to stream on Apple TV+.
