The Seattle Seahawks released veteran wide receiver Tyler Lockett on Wednesday in a move to clear salary before NFL free agency begins next week.
Shortly later, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that star receiver DK Metcalf has requested a trade. Metcalf, a second-round pick in the 2019 draft, has spent six seasons in Seattle and finished last season with 66 receptions for 992 yards and five touchdowns.
Lockett played 10 seasons in Seattle and ranks No. 2 on the team’s all-time list in receiving yards (8,594), receptions (661) and receiving touchdowns (61). The third-round pick in 2015 became a fan favorite over the years.
“Always a Seahawk through and through,” the Seahawks posted on X about Lockett. “Thank you for 10 seasons of clutch plays, a commitment to this community, and a lifetime of memories.”
“I really enjoyed being in Seattle!” Lockett posted on X. “I met so many great people and captured so many great memories! The 12’s really make this place meaningful!”
Lockett’s release came a day after the team cut outside linebacker Dre’Mont Jones, safety Rayshawn Jenkins, defensive tackle Roy Robertson-Harris and offensive lineman George Fant.
The cuts opened more than $30 million in salary cap space that the Seahawks can use during free agency to either re-sign their own players or go after new players.
