Rosie O’Donnell revealed on TikTok that she has moved to Ireland from the United States following Donald Trump’s presidential reelection.
In a nearly ten minute video, O’Donnell explained that she’s going through the process to get Irish citizenship and – without naming names – the move was spurred along by Trump’s return to the White House.
“It has been heartbreaking to see what is happening over there politically and hard for me personally as well,” O’Donnell said. Watch the full TikTok clip below.
She continued later, “When you know it is safe for all citizens to have equal rights there in America, that’s when we will consider coming back.”
O’Donnell moved to Ireland in mid-January, deeming it important to get her 12-year-old daughter out of the country. While she herself might have moved from the US, O’Donnell also rallied the American people to take a stand politically against what is happening.
“I encourage everyone to stand up, to use their voice, to protest, to demand that we follow the constitution in our country, and not a king and not a man and we don’t have cruelty as part of our governing style,” O’Donnell said.
She finished, “Protect your sanity as much as you can, and try not to swim in the chaos, if possible. But I know it’s nearly impossible when you’re there in the middle of it.”
O’Donnell is only the latest member of Hollywood’s LGBTQ community to leave or heavily consider leaving the US. Ellen Degeneres already moved to the UK and “Orange is the New Black” alum Laverne Cox revealed she was researching places in Europe and the Caribbean that might be safter.
Kirsten Schaffer, executive director of Women in Film, told TheWrap back in December that, as a lesbian in a long-term relationship with her partner and a mother of two, getting married is on her mind.
“It’s keeping me up at night [worrying] for myself and the wider community, especially the transgender community,” she said. “There were more guardrails last time: [Trump] didn’t have the House, Senate and judiciary. And he has Project 2025. I was concerned before, but now I’m really concerned.”
