Report: Detroit Lions agree to 3-year deal with CB D.J. Reed

The Detroit Lions didn’t take long to pivot after losing cornerback Carlton Davis to free agency. According to several reports (Jordan Schultz first), the Lions are signing former Jets cornerback D.J. Reed to a three-year, $48 million contract, including $32 million guaranteed. Reed will average $16 million a year, which is less than the reported $18-20 million Davis got with the Patriots (conflicting reports on Davis’ number).

Reed, a former fifth-round pick for the San Francisco 49ers, has spent the last three years with the New York Jets, starting 46 games over that stretch, while tallying 32 passes defended, and two interceptions. He’s also been active in the run game, with 220 tackles, seven tackles for loss, and two forced fumbles for the Jets.

Last year, Reed produced a 70.7 PFF grade, and allowed a 91.7 passer rating per PFF.

Though he’s just 5-foot-9, 188 pounds, Reed has the mentality and production as an outside cornerback. He’ll likely slide into a starting role alongside Terrion Arnold, with Amik Robertson and Ennis Rakestraw both capable of playing the outside and nickel cornerback positions.

For many, Reed was among the best cornerback on the free agent market—for example The Athletic had him as the No. 9 free agent available, only behind Chavarius Ward at the cornerback position. Reed was PFF’s No. 6 free agent, best among all cornerbacks available.
