Reeling from Luka Dončić trade, short-handed Mavericks lose by 43 to Cavaliers

After Saturday night’s stunning blockbuster trade that sent Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers, the Dallas Mavericks were likely shell-shocked going into Sunday’s matchup with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The Mavericks were significantly short-handed with three players shipped off to L.A. (two of whom, Dončić and Maxi Kleber, were already out with injuries). With the trade completed late, Anthony Davis and Max Christie haven’t yet joined the team either.

Kyrie Irving (sore right shoulder), P.J. Washington (right knee soreness) and Daniel Gafford (sore left ankle) were also out for the game. And center Dereck Lively II has been sidelined for the past two weeks, expected to miss two to three months with a fractured foot.

These weren’t the best circumstances under which to face the NBA-best Cavaliers on their home court. As could be expected, the Mavs were absolutely steamrolled.

Dallas was down by 45 at halftime, 91-46. Throughout the fourth quarter, the Mavericks trailed by 50 points, down 127-75 with 10 minutes remaining. The final score was 144-101.

Jaden Hardy led the zombie Mavericks squad with 19 points, followed by 14 points from Dante Exum. Naji Marshall and Kylor Kelley each added 12 points. Kelley, the only available center on the roster, also grabbed 10 rebounds.

Cleveland shot 59% on 3-pointers (26 for 44), led by nine from Sam Merrill, who scored a game-high 27 points. With virtually no frontcourt opposition, Evan Mobley tallied 22 points with 11 rebounds and four blocks. Darius Garland finished with 17 points and 10 assists. Eight Cavaliers scored in double figures.

Up next for the Cavaliers is a Tuesday clash with the Boston Celtics, pitting the Eastern Conference’s top two teams against each other. The Mavericks continue their four-game road trip at the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday before also facing the Celtics on Thursday.
