Red flag warnings, automatic burn bans in effect for Lyon and most surrounding counties Friday

Outdoor burning will be banned or strongly discouraged across the KVOE listening area Friday.

The National Weather Service has put five area counties under a red flag warning, signaling critical fire danger and automatic burn bans for the affected counties. Lyon, Coffey, Morris, Osage and Wabaunsee counties are included from 10 am to 8 pm. Chase and Greenwood counties are currently not included, but fire danger is listed as very high — so outdoor burns are not recommended.

Dry grasses, low humidity levels, winds up to 25 mph, a wind shift from southwest to northwest and air temperatures near 70 degrees will lead to the fire danger. The Kansas Forest Service has said “vegetation will burn aggressively” Friday even with wet ground underneath.
