KANSAS CITY — Kris Boyd made a big mistake on the first play of the Houston Texans’ divisional round playoff game against the Chiefs, then compounded it by shoving his coach.

The Chiefs’ Nikko Remigio returned the game’s opening kick 63 yards to to the Texans’ 32-yard line, but as Boyd was bringing Remigio down, he was able to strip the return man. As players from both sides scrambled to recover the fumble, Boyd ran towards the sidelines with his arms outstretched in celebration, then took off his helmet and threw it, all while the Chiefs were able to jump on the loose ball.

Boyd was hit with an unsportsmanlike penalty for throwing his helmet, putting the Chiefs inside the Texans’ 20 on their opening drive.

What came next is what people will be talking about from this game. As Texans special teams coach Frank Ross went to meet Boyd on the sidelines, Boyd gave him a two-hand shove in his chest and continued to yell at him while wagging his finger in his face.

Boyd continued to play on special teams on punts and kickoffs.

The former Gilmer High School and University of Texas star played four seasons with the Vikings and one with the Cardinals before the Texans signed the defensive back to the practice squad in October 2023. He was active for two games last season and has been active for every game this season. The only defensive snaps Boyd has seen this season was in the regular season finale win at Tennessee.
