Jeffrey Dean Morgan Makes His Villainous Debut In ‘Invincible’

The penultimate episode of Invincible added another Walking Dead alum to the franchise, casting Jeffrey Dean Morgan in a role he is quite familiar with.

Morgan appeared in episode 7, titled “What Have I Done?”, as the supervillain Conquest, a Virtumite mercenary prepared to destroy Invincible (Steven Yeun).

Viewers of the episode may have experienced side effects such as déjà vu, recalling when Morgan and Yeun initially faced off against each other in The Walking Dead.

Ultimately leaving Yeun literally with his face off, it’s safe to say fans are hoping for a different outcome this time — and perhaps some revenge for his character, Glenn.

Morgan, renowned for some of his notorious performances, including Negan in The Walking Dead and the Comedian in Watchmen, is a craftsman who creates deep hatred for his characters while elevating his co-stars’ performances.

Deeply invested Invincible fanatics may have seen Morgan’s debut coming from afar.

GamesRadar reported that Morgan publicized his interest in the show on his Instagram in January 2023, leaning on editions two and three of Robert Kirkman, Cory Walker, and Ryan Ottley’s Invincible comic book series. He captioned the post, “Doing a little reading. Thanks to #robertkirkman.”

Per The Express Tribune, Conquest’s entrance came toward the end of the episode after Invincible variants caused mass destruction across the city. Above Invincible, an older, towering figure floated and immediately began to assert his dominance: “Stand ready for my arrival, worm,” a quote directly from the comics.

Even though Conquest only had a bit of screentime, he left a lasting impression by explaining his motive and setting up what seems to be an epic season finale.

The Express Tribune also reported that he was sent as a final warning to fulfill their earthly duty of preparing the planet for the arrival of the Virtumites. A fed-up Invincible responded, “This isn’t the time.” As they continue to converse, Invincible’s anger only builds, leading to the episode’s ending. The two fly towards each other and the episode ends before the battle can begin, leaving what should be an intense start to the season finale.

Per GamesRadar, if the show is comic book accurate, Conquest’s strength matches that of Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons), suggesting that Invincible is in for the fight of his life.

The season 3 finale will air on Prime Video March 13.
