On December 25 commencing at 6:45 p.m. local time (7:45 p.m. Japan time), for approximately 90 minutes, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, during his visit to Beijing in the People’s Republic of China, held a dinner meeting with Mr. Liu Jianchao, Minister of the International Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee,

The overview of the meeting is as follows.

  1. Foreign Minister Iwaya stated that he seeks to firmly advance the comprehensive promotion of a “Mutually Beneficial Relationship Based on Common Strategic Interests” and building “constructive and stable Japan-China relations, which was confirmed between the leaders of both countries, and that his current visit to China is the first step towards this end, and that he seeks to make this an opportunity to activate high-level exchanges. In response, Minister Liu expressed his affirmation.
  2. Both sides concurred on the recognition that it is important to continue to have communication between various relevant personnel, and that the exchange between political parties including through the Japan-China Ruling Party Exchange Council is an important pillar that supports the Japan-China relationship.
  3. Further, both sides confirmed that a stable Japan-China relationship is important not only for Japan and China, but also for the region and the world, and that exchanges need to be built on in order to improve their citizens’ sentiment towards each other.
  4. Both sides also concurred on the recognition that it is important to promote mutual understanding through especially youth exchange and media exchange.
