I-TEAM : Who is Herman Hall, man killed in crash allegedly caused by LSU Star Kyren Lacy

THIBODAUX, La. (WAFB) – Herman Hall, 78, spent his entire life being proud of fighting for his country.

The doting father, grandfather and beloved neighbor was a friend to all, his daughter Heather Dickerson remembers.

Hall lost his life on December 17, 2024, when Louisiana State Police said 24-year-old Kyren Lacy was swerving in and out of lanes on LA Highway 20 in Chackbay, causing two vehicles to crash head-on into one another.

According to State Police, Lacy drove around the crash scene and fled south without stopping to render aid, call emergency services or report his involvement in the crash.

Dickerson told the WAFB I-TEAM this week that they were told in the days following the crash that someone “high profile” was involved, but did not indicate it was Kyren Lacy.

Hall’s life is remembered in family photos from beloved moments that are now cherished memories. Hall served two tours in Vietnam and came back to his beloved Louisiana. He retired from customs after working there for 36 years.

“He loved to garden,” Dickerson said. “He loved to ride his bike. He used to ride his bike 28 miles per day, told great stories. He loved his family and friends.”

On the day of the crash, Dickerson said her parents were out running routine errands. She actually called her parents to check on them moments after the crash occurred.

“She said we just got into a wreck,” Dickerson recalled her mom telling her. “I said you just got into a wreck? What are you talking about? Yeah, we got into a head on collision. The car is totaled. I asked if she’s ok – she said yeah I’m fine. My chest hurts, but maybe it’s from the seatbelt or the airbag.”

Dickerson said she also asked about her dad.

“He’s fine, but he’s complaining that his back hurts,” Dickerson said. “She said I have to go. She hangs up and calls back and says they are going to airlift your dad to UMC [University Medical Center in New Orleans]. Wait what, AirMed? You said he was ok, he will be fine. Apparently, she was in shock.”

Hall was not fine. He died after arriving at the hospital.

“The doctors walk out with their heads down,” Dickerson recalled. “He said your dad didn’t make it. I thought he made it out of surgery, and he said his heart gave out. We gave him gallons of blood because his intestines were lacerated. His heart stopped and finally gave out.”

With Dickerson now learning that Lacy is responsible for allegedly causing the hit-and-run crash, she wants to make sure that no special treatment is given due to his fame.

“They need to have consequences,” Dickerson said. “I don’t want it to be swept under the rug because of who they may or may not be and who they know. We all know that happens. We will make sure there is justice some way.”

State Police said they are in touch with Lacy’s legal team for him to turn himself in.
