WASHINGTON D.C., DC — A congressman from Houston is calling for the impeachment of President Donald Trump because of his proposal on Tuesday for the United States to “take over” the Gaza Strip.
“We’ll own it and be responsible for dismantling all of the dangerous unexploded bombs and other weapons on the site, level the site, and get rid of the destroyed buildings, level it out, create an economic development that will supply unlimited numbers of jobs,” Trump said.
He suggested roughly 1.8 million Palestinians would be resettled elsewhere so the U.S. could redevelop Gaza into “the Riviera of the Middle East.”
“Ethnic cleansing in Gaza is not a joke,” Rep. Al Green, a Houston Democrat, said when he announced he would file articles of impeachment. “Especially when it emanates from the president of the United States, the most powerful person in the world when he has the ability to perfect what he says.”
Green said he will bring articles of impeachment against Trump “for dastardly deeds proposed and dastardly deeds done.”
The Democrat also criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who appeared to support Trump’s proposal during a joint news conference.
” … The prime minister of Israel should be ashamed. Knowing the history of his people, to stand there and allow such things to be said. Ethnic cleansing. has been a crime against humanity,” Green said. ” … Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere, and injustice in Gaza is a threat to justice in the United States of America.”
This is the fourth time Green has filed articles of impeachment against the president.
Trump was impeached in 2021 for inciting the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol and in 2019 for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress over his efforts to seek help from Ukraine in the presidential election.
