BIG BEAR, Calif. (VVNG.com) — Friends of Big Bear Valley (FOBBV) have provided an update regarding the current situation of Jackie, Shadow, and their three chicks.
As of 5:30 PM, on March 14, 2025, the team has been closely monitoring the nest, but due to snow accumulation around the nest bowl, the full view is still partially obstructed, making it difficult to observe the entire area of the nest.
During the first feeding session of the day, two of the chicks were visible in the accessible portion of the nest. Both chicks appeared healthy and alert, and both were fed during the session.
While the camera doesn’t have a full view, the team believes “all chicks are likely still in the clear space in the nest bowl, which is quite wide.”
All three chicks were observed yesterday evening during the last feeding, and there were no signs that Jackie or Shadow had removed anything from the nest large enough to be a chick.
FOBBV also addressed some misinformation circulating about the family. One claim suggested that Shadow stepped on a chick yesterday afternoon. However, the team clarified that as Shadow was leaving the nest bowl, one chick was resting briefly atop his foot — a common behavior for the chicks.
The chick was gently moved away from the others but quickly rolled back into position, and all three chicks were seen feeding together later that day.
Another false report involved Jackie allegedly striking a chick during an interaction with a flying squirrel earlier this morning.
FOBBV explained that while Jackie did perform a wingslap, it was to dislodge snow from the nest rather than to harm a chick. The chicks remain large and heavy, and the nest bowl is deep enough that nothing large enough to be a chick could be moved with a simple wingslap.
Throughout the day, Jackie and Shadow made five food deliveries to the nest. The most recent feeding occurred at 5:24 PM PST, with two chicks fed. The team expects clearer skies tomorrow, which should provide a better view of the nest and the chicks.
FOBBV reiterated the importance of patience and understanding when observing nature.
“We are observers of nature. Things happen that we cannot control. We do not know the entirety of the current situation at this time,” the update states. “We have the opportunity to observe the miracles of nature in all of its aspects. Please approach it with patience, understanding, and heartfelt kindness to those around you.”
The team of volunteers continues to monitor the nest around the clock, and as soon as they have a clearer view, they will provide additional updates to the public.
