Freezing rain falling in southcentral Pennsylvania this morning. What you need to know.

It’s icy outside this morning as freezing rain is falling in southcentral Pennsylvania.

The York Airport in York County and the Muir Army Air Field in Lebanon County are reporting freezing rain as well as fog and mist at 6:45 a.m. Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

The frozen precipitation is predicted to continue until noon today. The forecast calls for a switchover to rain as temperatures will rise into the mid-40s, the weather service says.

Many school buildings in York and Adams counties are closed. Some districts are offering virtual learning.

Some government agencies have delays today as well. The City of York has a one-hour delay, and the County of York will have a delayed opening.

PennDOT reduces speed limit on highways because of slick conditions

The state Department of Transportation has reduced the speed limit to 45 mph on the following highways in southcentral Pennsylvania:

  • Interstate 81, from the Maryland state line to Mile 96.8 District line
  • Interstate 78, entire length
  • Interstate 83, entire length
  • Interstate 283, entire length
  • US-11, from Duncannon north to the District line
  • US-30 from PA-24 to PA-462
  • US-22 from I-81 to Millerstown

Tier 4 restrictions are in place on many of the highways as well. Commercial vehicles are prohibited from traveling on the roadway.
