Former New York Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner and his wife, Jessica, are grieving the devastating loss of their 14-year-old son, Miller, who passed away on Friday after falling ill while on vacation.
The couple shared the heartbreaking news in a statement released through the Yankees, revealing that Miller had become sick along with other family members. Despite their search for answers, they remain in shock over the sudden tragedy.
“With heavy hearts, we are saddened to announce the passing of our youngest son, Miller. He was 14 years old and has left us far too soon after falling ill along with several other family members while on vacation,” the statement read. “We have so many questions and so few answers at this point, but we do know that he passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of Friday, March 21st.”
The grieving parents described Miller as a beloved son and brother whose infectious smile brightened the lives of those around him. He was passionate about football, baseball, golf, hunting, and fishing, and he cherished time with his family and friends.
The Gardner family expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support they have received and requested privacy during this difficult time.
The Yankees organisation also issued a heartfelt statement, mourning the loss of Miller and standing in solidarity with the Gardner family.
“Our hearts are heavy, and the Yankees family is filled with grief after learning of the passing of Miller Gardner,” the team said. “Words feel insignificant and insufficient in trying to describe such an unimaginable loss.”
The statement acknowledged Miller’s vibrant spirit, describing him as having “a spark in his eyes, an outgoing and feisty personality, and a warm and loving nature.” The Yankees emphasised their unwavering love and support for Brett, Jessica, and their son Hunter as they navigate this tragic time.
Details regarding the location of the family’s vacation remain unknown.
Brett Gardner spent 14 seasons with the Yankees, helping the team secure its last World Series title in 2009. He retired following the 2021 season and has remained out of the baseball spotlight since.
