FULTONDALE, Ala. (WIAT) — Storm shelters have opened up around central Alabama as communities prepare for severe weather on Saturday.
About five dozen people gathered at the tornado safe room in Fultondale on Walker Chapel Road Saturday afternoon.
That safe room can hold up to 400 individuals, according to signage posted outside.
CBS42 News talked with some families who thought this was the safest place to be during this event on Saturday afternoon.
Mother and son Kesi and Kyrie Anderson, of Gardendale, prepared to wait it out together.
Kesi Anderson said she and her son plan to pass the time by listening to audio books, playing Nintendo, talking and praying.

“Well we have a garden home, one level, no basement,” Anderson explained. “So a risk, taking a chance, so I thought it was the best decision to come here.”
“I feel a lot safer being knowing that I’m in a place where a tornado cannot really break it down,” her ten-year-old son, Kyrie, added.
This shelter is designed to withstand up to 250 mile per hour winds.
Mary Ann Gray went to the shelter with her husband and daughter and grandson, and she is taking the weather very seriously.
She attached a flashlight to a large water bottle that can serve as a warning light if the power goes out. She also wrote her name and phone number on her arm.
They have a backpack with snacks and beverages, a helmet and reading material, and laptops and chords.
