A former Wolverine is going from the best team in the NBA to one fighting for a playoff spot.
Caris LeVert is being traded from the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Atlanta Hawks, according to a report from ESPN on Thursday, the day of the league’s trade deadline. LeVert, Georges Niang, and three second-round picks are headed to Atlanta in exchange for De’Andre Hunter.
LeVert is in his ninth season in the league and fourth in Cleveland. The reserve guard is averaging 10.2 points, 3.7 assists, and 2.8 rebounds per game. He is shooting 45 percent from the field and 41 percent from 3.
The 6-foot-6 LeVert was drafted 20th overall in 2016, landing in Brooklyn after a trade. He stayed there until he was traded to the Indiana Pacers in January of 2021. He was dealt to Cleveland the following year.
At Michigan, LeVert blossomed as a sophomore before injuries limited him to a total of 31 games over his last two years at Michigan.
He helped the Cavs to an NBA-best 41-10 record, first place in the Eastern Conference. The Hawks (23-28) are in ninth place.
Hunter, the fourth overall pick in the 2019 NBA draft, is averaging a career-high 19 points per game this season. LeVert is in the final year of his current contract.
