Dennis Schroder gets trade deadline move, outgoing Warriors star ‘not expected’ to stay on his new team long

Dennis Schroder likely won’t stay with the Utah Jazz after being traded as part of the Jimmy Butler package.

The Golden State Warriors won the race for Jimmy Butler last night. They constructed a multi-team deal with the Miami Heat, Detroit Pistons, and Utah Jazz, which saw Dennis Schroder join the Jazz. This is the second time he’s been traded this season, joining the Warriors in December after the Brooklyn Nets traded him.

The Utah Jazz are 12-37 this season. While the team has shown it can be competitive, beating the Warriors last night 131-128 after executing a double-digit fourth-quarter comeback, they’re a tanking roster. The 31-year-old Schroder makes no sense on their roster right now.

He was traded by the Nets because he was leading them to too many wins earlier this year. This likely means Schroder’s stay in Utah will be very short.

After the Butler trade was announced, it was revealed by Marc J. Spears that the Jazz don’t intend on keeping Dennis Schroder on the squad.

Schroder is averaging 14.4 points and 5.5 assists this season. He looked great to start the season on the Nets where he averaged 18.4 points and 6.6 assists.

However, he was lackluster on the Warriors, averaging 10.6 points and 4.4 assists in 24 games. Golden State didn’t need a guard like him in the first place. Through this trade, they got back good value by moving him.

The Jazz will likely move on from Dennis Schroder before the trade deadline expires later today. If they fail to find an acceptable trade, Schroder could be bought out of his expiring $13 million contract. If he’s bought out, he’s free to sign with any team under the second apron in the buyout market.

This would mean Schroder switched teams for the ninth time since leaving the Atlanta Hawks in 2018.

The Los Angeles Lakers have to keep a close eye on what’s happening with Dennis Schroder. He’s had two separate stints between 2020-21 and 2022-23 with the franchise, averaging 13.9 points and 5.1 assists in 127 games.

If he’s available for trade, the team should consider using Gabe Vincent’s contract to try and land Schroder. However, the Jazz won’t be incentivized to make the deal without draft assets. This likely costs them a first-round pick swap at the minimum, too steep a price.

On top of that, the Jazz likely don’t want to help the Lakers right now. The franchise used them to facilitate the Luka Doncic trade without letting them know.

They’re hoping no team bites on Dennis Schroder being available so that he enters the buyout market. The Lakers could upgrade their backup guard spot behind Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves. Currently, Gabe Vincent is the only playable backup backcourt option right now.

Outside of the Lakers, contenders like the Dallas Mavericks, Milwaukee Bucks, Philadephia 76ers, and Minnesota Timberwolves should consider making a move for Schroder.
