FRISCO, Texas – As the Cowboys get started in the process to replace Mike McCarthy as head coach, many candidates are expected to surface in the headlines.
None of them will likely be a bigger name than Deion Sanders, who has turned around the Colorado Buffaloes in two seasons in Boulder.
According to multiple reports, Sanders has already met with Cowboys owner/GM Jerry Jones in an informal meeting. An official coaching interview can’t occur until Wednesday, when McCarthy’s contract officially expires.
Sanders was quoted in an ESPN social media post about his visit with Jones.
“To hear from Jerry Jones is truly delightful and it’s intriguing,” Sanders Monday night. “I love Jerry and believe in Jerry. After you hang up, and process it, and think about it, it’s intriguing. But I love Boulder.”
Not only did he coach Travis Hunter into a two-way star the won the Heisman Trophy, but coached his two sons, Shedeur and Shilo Sanders. As a quarterback, Shedeur is expected to be a Top 5 pick in next year’s draft, along with Hunter.
Colorado went 9-4 this past season after a 4-8 record in Sanders’ first season in Boulder.
This wouldn’t be the first time Jones has courted Sanders. Back in 1995, Sanders was coming off the NFL Defensive Player of the Year award with the 49ers, who also beat the Cowboys in the NFC Championship that year. Sanders signed a lucrative free-agent deal and joined the Cowboys, who won Super Bowl XXX.
Sanders played five seasons with the Cowboys, earning four Pro Bowl selections. In 1996, Sanders became the first two-way starter in the NFL since the 1960s. He started both at wide receiver and cornerback, similar to Hunter this year at Colorado, helping him win the Heisman Trophy.
