LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A new residency was announced Thursday for the Las Vegas Sphere, and it represents the first country music act to take the stage at Las Vegas’ newest venue.
Singer-songwriter Kenny Chesney will have his first of 12 planned concerts at Sphere on May 22. The series promises to showcase the possibilities provided by the futuristic Las Vegas venue.
“Just the idea of 4D technology and the impossibly dialed in sound raises the experience for No Shoes Nation, literally immersing them in music, visuals, sound and being together,” Chesney said. “To me, this is going to be a whole new way of rocking the fans, and I can’t wait.”
Chesney said he signed on to the Sphere residency before seeing a performance there.
“When we started talking, I flew to Vegas with my key tour team. We stood on the floor as they ran the film of U2’s show and we were completely consumed,” he said. “We could see the band, but it was so much more than that. It almost took what they were doing and multiplied it by another dimension.”
The residency had been kept secret for almost a year, a news release said, as Sphere Studios developed an immersive experience meant to augment Chesney’s catalog of music. The residency was announced on stage during a presentation at Preview Las Vegas, an event held by the Vegas Chamber at the Las Vegas Convention Center on Thursday.
“I was listening to a new playlist when I was in the gym this morning of the artists [that are] going to be coming, and he was telling me that if you have no shirt, no shoes, no problem,” said Bill Walshe, executive vice president, global head of venue operations and development for Sphere Entertainment before emphasizing the company’s commitment to a “diversity of content” at Sphere. “Country music is coming to Sphere.”
VIP packages and early access tickets will be available at Vibee, while the general public can buy tickets starting at 10 a.m. on Jan. 21 at Kenny Chesney’s website. Performances are scheduled for May 22, 24, 25, 28, 30, 31, June 4, 6, 7, 11, 13, and 14.
