Christopher Walken on the ‘Awkward’ Severance ‘Love Triangle’ Scene with John Turturro and TV Husband (Exclusive)

Warning: This post contains spoilers from season 2 of Severance.

Fans saw a new side of Christopher Walken‘s character in the latest episode of Severance — and the acting icon is breaking it all down.

Episode 6, titled “Attila,” which dropped on Apple TV+ on Friday, Feb. 21, sees Burt (Walken) and Irving (John Turturro) meeting as their “outies” for dinner with Burt’s husband Cecil Fields, played by John Noble.

The trio spoke about Burt’s origins at Lumon and what their day-to-day experiences at the company entailed, then things got uncomfortable when Cecil brought up the possibility of Burt and Irving’s “innies” having “unprotected sex.”

Catching up with PEOPLE, Walken, 81, is breaking down the dinner party scene in question.

“In the first season, you see me and you see Burt and Irving, and almost all our stuff is with each other, and it’s just the two of them. In the second season, it’s on the outside,” he says. “You see Burt’s house, you see where he lives, you see how he dresses. You meet his husband, and suddenly the two of them becomes a [love] triangle.”

“You’ve got Irving and Burt, and then you’ve got the husband, which is almost bound to be awkward,” he continues. “It’s like you bring your boyfriend home to meet your husband. It’s a little bit tricky. So that’s how I saw it.”

Awkwardness aside, it’s always a perk for Walken to get the chance to work alongside Turturro. The pair’s decades of friendship made it that much easier for them to build chemistry as onscreen love interests.

“I think that the fact that we know each other very well for a long time was very useful,” Walken explains. “We didn’t have to struggle to make our relationship real or believable. I think you look at it and you see that John and I know each other, that we like each other. Kind of like when you see a married couple or people who are together.”

“I think that Burt and Irving have a lot to do with John and Chris,” he adds.

Despite the show’s darker themes and subject matters, Walken can find moments of levity between takes — and Turturro, 67, is a big help in that.

“That was one of the nice things, being an actor in the movies, there’s a lot of sitting around and waiting for them to fix the lights and so on,” he says. “John and I just had a lot of fun sitting there talking. We talked about everything. We talked about maybe writing a book about all the things we talked about.”
