Chip Kelly shares his regrets over play-calling in Ohio State football vs. TTUN game

No one is claiming that the Ohio State football team played well against Michigan. It was by far the worst game that they have played offensively all season long. They didn’t score at all in the second half and managed just ten points against a 6-5 Michigan team.

After the game was over, Chip Kelly took a massive amount of criticism. He was criticized specifically for his lack of passing plays on the outside. Jeremiah Smith didn’t get the ball enough in that game. Instead, the Ohio State Buckeyes just tried to run the ball up the middle into the strength of Michigan’s defense.

Monday afternoon was the first time that anyone had heard from Kelly since that awful game against TTUN. It was the first time that the media got to ask him questions. He was peppered with questions about his play-calling in that game. To his credit, he shared regrets on how it all went down.

Kelly didn’t do the cliche thing of saying he wouldn’t do anything differently. In fact, he said that would be stupid to do. He said he would have changed a lot of things when it comes to the play-calling. Kelly said that he should have tried more creative ways to get Jeremiah Smith the ball as well.

Kelly specifically mentioned that sometimes you can fall into the trap of thinking you need to win the rushing battle in order to win a game like that. He said that after looking at the tape that they should have tried to get the ball to the guys on the outside more.

Based on his comments, it seems like Kelly is determined not to let what happened against Michigan happen again. I would expect the offense to throw it around more than they did in that game. Tennessee is going to see a different game plan.
