Broncos sign former 49ers safety to a 3-year deal worth up to $45 million

The Denver Broncos are looking to close on San Francisco 49ers free agent safety Talanoa Hufanga, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, potentially taking him off the board.

Hufanga, 26, is coming off a year where he played in just seven games while dealing with a number of injuries, racking up 38 tackles and two tackles for loss.

He’s two seasons removed from an All-Pro season where he accumulated a career-high 97 tackles, nine pass breakups, five tackles for loss, four interceptions, and two forced fumbles back in 2022.

Kyle’s update, 12:10 p.m. PT: Talanoa Hufanga has officially signed with the Denver Broncos on a three-year contract worth $45 million. Hufanga gets $20 million guaranteed in the deal.

If the Broncos do ultimately close on the deal, Hufanga will join a safety room that is headlined by Brandon Jones, who had 115 tackles and 10 pass breakups in 2024. P.J. Locke, Devon Key, and J.L. Skinner make up the rest of the room.

The 49ers weren’t expected to bring back Hufanga in free agency, but it does create a void at safety, as they now have Malik Mustapha, Ji’Ayir Brown, and George Odum in their safety room.

Denver has already made a splash in free agency, re-signing former 49ers defensive tackle D.J. Jones to a three-year, $39 million deal. Now, they could be adding Hufanga to their vaunted defense, adding another playmaker in the secondary.
