Craig Kimbrel’s career has come full circle.
The former Red Sox closer is signing a minor league deal with the Braves, per The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal. Kimbrel, 36, rose to prominence with Atlanta and spent the first five seasons of his career in a Braves uniform.
With 440 career saves, Kimbrel currently sits fifth on the all-time list, but is coming off a 2024 season with Baltimore that saw him post a 5.33 ERA. Ahead of the postseason, the Orioles designated Kimbrel for assignment in September.
According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, Kimbrel’s new deal will pay him $2 million in the major leagues, and the plan is for the nine-time All-Star to get there eventually.
“Kimbrel is expected to ramp up for a few weeks and, if all goes according to plan, join the Braves’ big league bullpen,” Passan writes.
Traded to the Red Sox in November of 2015, Kimbrel spent three seasons in Boston and was a member of their 2018 World Series team. He made three All Star teams, posted a 2.55 ERA, and recorded 108 saves during his Red Sox tenure.
