Adam Sandler’s casual Oscars outfit was a highlight of the award show for many viewers.
Sandler went against the Oscars’ famously formal attire by wearing a blue hoodie and shorts to the award show.
Host Conan O’Brien called out Sandler in what appeared to be a planned exchange in which O’Brien talked about the importance of dressing appropriately for the ceremony.
“For such a prestigious night, it’s important the everyone is properly dressed,” O’Brien said.
“Adam, what are you wearing?” asked O’Brien, as the camera cut to Sandler sitting in the audience wearing a light blue hoodie, dark blue gym shorts, white socks and sneakers.
“Nobody even thought about what I was wearing until you brought it up,” Sandler replied.
O’Brien then said Sandler looked like “a guy playing video poker at 2 a.m.,” to which Sandler responded with “I like the way I look. Because I’m a good person; I don’t care about what I wear and what I don’t wear (and that) my snazzy gym shorts and fluffy sweatshirt offend you so much that you had to mock me in front my peers!”
Sandler’s audacious appearance stole the show for dozens of Oscar viewers, with one X user calling it the “best bit in the last 20 years of the stuffy Oscars.”
“We need to treasure that man,” another X user wrote in the comments section of ABC’s post of the encounter.
“Protect Adam Sandler at all costs,” another X user wrote.
People on TikTok were equally entertained, with one user commenting on Daily Mail’s video, “No one could ever make me hate Adam Sandler he’s the only one who can show up in sweats and it’s like ‘yeah this is normal, anyways.’”
“Definition of The GOAT,” another TikTok user wrote.
After being the brunt of O’Brien’s joke, Sandler stormed out of the Oscars, but not before giving best actor nominee Timothée Chalamet some love.
“And one more thing, Chalamet,” Sandler shouted before giving the actor a hug.
This was a reference to a joke comedian Nikki Glaser made at the Golden Globes where the host said Chalamet’s last name sounded like something Sandler would hilariously scream.
“Adam Sandler storming out but still stealing the show with that Chalamet kiss? Iconic,” a TikTok user said of the encounter.
The 97th Academy Awards took place on Sunday night, March 2. The biggest winner of the night was “Anora,” which won five of the six awards it was up for.
