Fabric and crafts retailer Joann Inc. plans to hundreds dozens of stores, including 33 in Michigan.
According to a court filing Wednesday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware, the Hudson, Ohio-based company outlined more than 500 store closures out of about 800 locations across the country, including the locations in Michigan. Joann filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last month, its second such filing within a year.

At the time, the company cited “increasingly tight liquidity levels” — meaning it was having a hard time finding enough cash to maintain operations. Those obstacles, coupled with “significant and lasting challenges in the retail environment” gave the company no choice but to seek bankruptcy protection again, interim chief executive Michael Prendergast said in a news release.
Joann is the latest in a slew of specialty retailers to file for bankruptcy or announce store closures.
Party City, once the destination for celebration essentials and holiday decor, announced in December it was going out of businesses and closing all of its stores. That same week, Big Lots said it was liquidating all 900 stores. Eight days later, the discount retailer said it found a buyer who would keep at least 200 stores open, possibly preserving thousands of jobs. Two days before Christmas, the Container Store also announced a bankruptcy filing, though no layoffs or store closures were imminent.
Other retail sectors have been hit by store closures as well. Rite Aid closed all of its Michigan locations last year and Macy’s said last month it would shut 66 stores nationwide, including locations in Troy, Sterling Heights, Traverse City and Flint.
