- A reminder Jayden Daniels is a rookie in the NFL – but has just thrown for 299 yards, two touchdowns, rushed for 51 yards and didn’t turn the ball over once.
- In so becoming just the second rookie QB ever to beat a top seed in the play-offs – and he’s walking around like he just playing backyard football. Astonishing.

- This Washington Commanders story is a remarkable one this season, and they’re back in the NFC title game for the first time since 1992, the year they last won a Super Bowl…
- We know half of the final four and one venue as the Chiefs will play at home next week against the Bills or Ravens. Over in the NFC the Commanders will be on the road again, but will it be west coast or east coast?
- Sunday 26 January
- NFC Championship game: Washington (6) at Los Angeles Rams (4) or Philadelphia Eagles (2), 20:00 GMT
- AFC Championship game: Baltimore Ravens (3) or Buffalo Bills (2) at Kansas City Chiefs (1), 23:30 GMT

- Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels speaking to FOX:
- “As a team we believe in each other and in the man upstairs. He prepared us in the right way.
- “It’s a surreal moment, especially for the fans who came out and supported us from day one.”
- Washington Commanders 45-31 Detroit Lions
- Jason Bell

- This kid (Jayden Daniels) is a star, it’s like he’s been in this moment before. He performed at a high level, his team leaned on him. Even in the clutch moments the plays were called for him. They didn’t hold anything back.
- Six teams remain – here’s the updated bracket with the Washington Commanders going to either Los Angeles or Philadelphia next up as they play the winners of tomorrow’s game between the Rams and Eagles.

- The Washington Commanders, with head coach Dan Quinn in his first year in charge and with rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels under centre, have taken down the top seed in the NFC – the 15-2 Detroit Lions.
- Daniels was decisive, incisive and cold-blooded as he just kept on producing the goods play after play after play, and that relelntless aggression was just too much for the Lions to keep pace with.
- Especially with Detroit committing five turnovers to scupper their attack, and with their injury-hit defence unable to slow Daniels down proving to be the big difference.
- Washington Commanders 45-31 Detroit Lions
- Tom Brady
- Seven-time Super Bowl winner on FOX
- The story of the game for me is five turnovers for the Lions and zero for the Commanders.
- Washington Commanders 45-31 Detroit Lions
- Congratulations to the Washington Commanders who score a stunning upset at the Detroit Lions to book their spot in the NFC Championship game.
- Washington Commanders 45-31 Detroit Lions
- That’s the game! Jared Goff is picked off taking his shot at the end zone as Washington are going to stun the NFC top seeds here in Detroit.
- Washington Commanders 45-31 Detroit Lions
- Clock’s ticking down and Detroit dinking and dunking their way down the field but at some point Jared Goff has to take a shot at the end zone.
- 40 second left to play…
- Washington Commanders 45-31 Detroit Lions
- Two minutes left on the block and Detroit simply have to race down the field and score quickly, then look to recover an onside kick to try and somehow salvage this game.
- There’s a lot of stunned Detroit fans around Ford Field right now.
- Washington Commanders 45-31 Detroit Lions
- Not the ideal start to this must-score drive from Detroit as Jared Goff is sacked, but he does get some of that yardage back with a throw over the middle to Sam LaPorta.
- Washington Commanders 45-31 Detroit Lions
- Zane Gonzalez hooks his effort from 44 yards out and the leads stays at a healthy 14 points but not as comfortable as it perhaps would’ve been at 17 and three scores instead of two.
- Washington Commanders 45-31 Detroit Lions
- Tom Brady
- Seven-time Super Bowl winner on FOX
- So many of these games come down to quarterback play, making the right decisions and reads. Coach Kingsbury (Washington offensive coordinator) has put the ball in Daniels’ hands and every play said ‘you make a good decision’. He’s got multiple options, he makes positive plays. That poise you don’t measure at the NFL Combine, it’s something scouts can miss.
- Washington Commanders 45-31 Detroit Lions
- Jayden Daniels once again stays cool in the pocket on a must-have third down and floats a pass to back-up tight end John Bates to extend the drive that could seal this game.
- Washington Commanders 45-31 Detroit Lions
- The onside kicks have been diluted a bit now you have to declare it in my opinion, but Detroit still almost recover it when Zach Ertz bobbles the ball when he looks to dive on it, but he recovers well and Washington retain possession.
- That was a worry for a second though.
- Washington Commanders 45-31 Detroit Lions
- Detroit restricted to fourth down, and they opt to take the three points through a 28-yard Jake Bates field goal rather than waste time going for one of the two touchdowns they also need as they’re down 17.
- It’s now a 14-point gap with five minutes left to play. That’s a tough mountain to climb, but after what we’ve seen tonight we know points can be scored in an instant by either of these sides.
- Washington Commanders 45-28 Detroit Lions
- Jason Bell
- Former NFL cornerback on Sky Sports
- When are the Lions going to turn up the dial? It’s going to have to happen soon. They’ve still got a lot of time but soon enough it’s going to get agressive on both sides of the ball.
Page 2
- Washington Commanders 45-28 Detroit Lions
- Detroit are still in there fighting, with Amon-Ra St Brown taking a great catch, but an deven bigger hit as he’s smashed as soon as he catches a 20-yard pass from Jared Goff that moves Detriot to the brink of the red zone.
- Washington Commanders 45-28 Detroit Lions
- Jayden Daniels has been clutch this season, leading Washington to six comeback wins.
- But now it’s number one seed Detroit that must fight back in the final few minutes if they’re to avoid an upset. Can they do it?

- Washington lost Sam Cosmi (guard) earlier in the game. But it doesn’t matter, it’s not changed what they’ve been able to do physically.
- Washington Commanders 44-28 Detroit Lions
- Tom Brady
- Seven-time Super Bowl winner on FOX
- An incredible display of poise and composure from Daniels. That’s part of the emotional make-up. Then there’s the physical make-up. The speed, the accuracy, he’s got the whole package.
- Washington Commanders 45-28 Detroit Lions
- It’s there! A tough one-yard bulldozer of a run from Jeremy McNichols who stretches to get the ball over the line for their sixth touchdown of the game!
- Washington Commanders 38-28 Detroit Lions
- They get it again! Jayden Daniels has ice in his veins, as he finds Terry McLaurin on the fourth down throw to move the sticks all the way to the five-yard line.
- Washington Commanders 38-28 Detroit Lions
- Wow, we’ve not seen too many missed passes from Jayden Daniels or too many drops from Terry McLaurin, but we have both on that one play and now they’ll go for it again on fourth down..
- Washington Commanders 38-28 Detroit Lions
- Not a great time for a delay of game penalty on Washington, but Jayden Daniels responds with a big pass to Zach Ertz who is brought down just shy of the first down marker.
- Washington Commanders 31-21 Detroit Lions
- Tom Brady
- Seven-time Super Bowl winner on FOX
- They tried to run something a little bit gimmicky. A non-quarterback trying to throw the ball and read the defence. Not a great time for a trick play.
- Washington Commanders 38-28 Detroit Lions
- Austin Ekeler steams through a huge gap in the middle of the Detroit defensive line andhe scampers up across midfield for a massive 35-yard gain.
- That’s a big kick in the guts coming right on the back of that interception.
- Washington Commanders 38-28 Detroit Lions
- Ndamukong Suh
- Former NFL defensive tackle and 2021 Super Bowl winner on Sky Sports
- If you’re doing a trick play you shouldn’t be doing it with someone who’s not used to throwing the ball on a consistent basis. So for me, I blame that one on Ben Johnson.
- Washington Commanders 38-28 Detroit Lions
- It’s a trick play with receiver Jameson Williams ending up throwing the pass down the field, and he’s intercepted by Mike Sainristil – his second pick of the game!
- That’s an absolutely massive turning point in the game as Detroit were still moving the ball with ease in convential methods before trying that trickeration, which has backfired badly.
- Washington Commanders 38-28 Detroit Lions
- Phoebe Schecter
- BBC Sport NFL columnist on Sky Sports
- This is where you’ve got to keep focus for all four quarters. 12 men on the field – you just can’t give them a gift like that in the red zone.
- Washington Commanders 38-28 Detroit Lions
- We’re still trying to figure out how Detroit did not recognise those 12 men on the field as that was a massive momentum changer of a play on fourth down. That could have changed the game right there.
- You just can’t make mistakes like that in the play-offs. It’s not quite panic stations just yet but down 10 with just over 13 minutes left they have to get a wriggle on.
- Washington Commanders 38-28 Detroit Lions
- And Washington make them pay! We’ve had some fancy trick plays in this game, but this is just pounding the rock with running back Brian Robinson taking it right up the gut for the touchdown.
- That restores the Commanders’ 10-point lead.
- Washington Commanders 31-28 Detroit Lions
- Oh no! Detroit have 12 men on the field but nobody notices and the flag flies which gives Washington a first down just a yard out. That’s a massive mistake not only from the players but Detroit’s coaches who should’ve spotted that and called a timeout.
- Washington Commanders 31-28 Detroit Lions
- Let’s keep this simple, who will be the last team standing here?
- Thumbs up for Detroit as the home team, thumbs down for Washington.
- Washington Commanders 31-28 Detroit Lions
- We end the third with Austin Ekeler burrowing for a couple of yards to the Detroit five on second down. So it will be third down and two when we start the fourth quarter – room to get a first down before a touchdown if needed.
- Definitely four down territory for this Commanders team.
- Washington Commanders 31-28 Detroit Lions
- Fourth and two – of course Washington go for it and Jayden Daniels thinks about the hand off but keeps it and manages to get to the edge and convert for the first down.
- Good wheels on the rookie.
- Washington Commanders 31-21 Detroit Lions
- Tom Brady
- Seven-time Super Bowl winner on FOX
- Everyone says how cool, calm and collected Jayden Daniels is. When you add that to the work ethic he has, nothing surprises me. There’s a reason why he has so many comeback wins this season.
- When all else goes wrong, the quarterback can make people right. That’s why Washington drafted him.
Page 3
- Washington Commanders 31-28 Detroit Lions
- Josh Paschal rightly flagged for Detroit this time as he smashes Jayden Daniels and hits the quarterbacks head with his helmet – that’s a huge no-no in the NFL and costs his side 15 yards.
- Silly one really from Paschal.
- Washington Commanders 31-28 Detroit Lions
- Ndamukong Suh
- Former NFL defensive tackle and 2021 Super Bowl winner on Sky Sports
- Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery work in a great package. Montgomey was key to some of those plays so I say, run them both.
- Washington Commanders 31-28 Detroit Lions
- Jayden Daniels takes off on a really tough run when under pressure to pick up a first down. Washington have tried to look after the franchise quarterback all season but the gloves are off in the play-offs.
- Washington Commanders 31-28 Detroit Lions
- That was inevitable! Jahmyr Gibbs gets the hand off eight yards out and he makes no mistakes using his speed first and then his power by lowering the shoulder to finishi it off in the end zone.
- Yes, a stroke of luck for the Lions with that bad call, but that was one play of a 91-yard drive that’s sure to have taken a ton of energy out of the Washington defence as well as provided a huge boost to Detroit.
- Washington’s offence needs an answer now.

- Washington Commanders 31-21 Detroit Lions
- Tom Brady
- Seven-time Super Bowl winner on FOX
- Amon-Ra St. Brown reminds me so much of a young Hines Ward. So unheralded, does all the dirty work, so unselfish, catches everything, blocks in the run game. Jared Goff could close his eyes and throw it to St Brown.
- Washington Commanders 31-21 Detroit Lions
- Shovel pass inside to Amon-Ra St Brown is amazing – the fact it’s from running back David Montgomery after hs took the lateral from Jared Goff is even more amazing.
- Those inside flips are usualy Patrick Mahomes territory – not a running back!
- Washington Commanders 31-21 Detroit Lions
- The Lions taking full advantage of that bogus face mask penalty as Jahmy Gibbs gets the short catch, waits for a blocker then dances into the space, throws in a spin move for good measure and gets the first down.
- Washington Commanders 31-21 Detroit Lions
- Ouch, tough one to take for Washington as they get a stop and look to get Detroit off the field, only to have a flag on them for a face mask, which in fact wasn’t a face mask at all!
- That’s a lifeline for Detroit.
- Washington Commanders 31-21 Detroit Lions
- David Montgomery gets smashed at the line of scrimmage, but just bounces out of the contact and then powers down the sideline for a first down. Muscular effort.
- Washington Commanders 31-21 Detroit Lions
- Wow! For just the second time in the game a Washington drive ends without any points as they punt the ball for the first time in the game.
- That’s a good start for the Detroit comeback bid.
- Washington Commanders 31-21 Detroit Lions
- Ndamukong Suh
- Former NFL defensive tackle and 2021 Super Bowl winner on Sky Sports
- For Detroit to get back in this game they need to be creative. For whatever reason for Goff, the lights have got a little too bright for him. Ben Johnson needs to calm him down, get him in a groove, and part of getting him in a groove involves trick plays.
- Washington Commanders 31-21 Detroit Lions
- Here we go then as the second half begins with Washington getting the ball, let’s see if any defence turns up this half…
- Washington Commanders 31-21 Detroit Lions
- Ndamukong Suh
- Former NFL defensive tackle and 2021 Super Bowl winner on Sky Sports
- I don’t think the defences came to play.
- Take what’s been given to you – that’s my problem with Jared Goff tonight. Credit to the Washington defence, they’re taking advantage of that.
- Washington Commanders 31-21 Detroit Lions
- Jason Bell
- Former NFL cornerback on Sky Sports
- The Commanders defence is stepping up to the challenge, getting pressure without blitzing, causing turnovers, making plays. And these quarterbacks are going toe-to-toe!
- Washington Commanders 31-21 Detroit Lions
- Last week Jayden Daniels became the first rookie in NFL history to lead his team in rushing and passing yards in a play-off win.
- He was also the first rookie quarterback to throw at least two touchdown passes in a road play-off victory since Washington’s Sammy Baugh threw for three TDs against Chicago in the 1937 NFL title game.
- And tonight he’s showing it was no fluke. He’s completed 14 of 21 passes for 242 yards and two touchdowns – and we’re only at half-time.

- Washington’s last win in Detroit came during week eight of the 2008 season, when Santana Moss scored a touchdown in a 25-17 victory.
- The only rookie quarterback who has beaten a number one seed in the play-offs is Joe Flacco, who led the Baltimore Ravens to a 13-10 win at the Tennessee Titans in that season’s Divisional Round.
- Jayden Daniels and the Commanders are on target for some big records here.
- Washington Commanders 31-21 Detroit Lions
- And breathe! What a half that was, you’ll struggle to find better entertainment than that in any sport won’t you?
- Seven touchdowns, over 600 yards of offence, three turnovers and a 10-point lead for the seventh seeded Commanders who came in as big underdogs against the top seeds Detroit.
- What on Earth will we see in the second half?
- Washington Commanders 31-21 Detroit Lions
- No Jared Goff! He has Jameson Williams racing into the end zone but the pass is underthrown and allows Washington’s Mike Sainristil to steal in for the interception in the end zone.
- That’s an insane ending to a truly insane first half.
- Washington Commanders 31-21 Detroit Lions
- 42 seconds left on the clock and Detroit are just inside the Washington half on second down. Jared Goff then fires a dart to Jahmyr Gibbs who goes down at the 30 and they’re well within field goal range now.
- They’ll run a play or two to find the end zone first before they take the kick though.
- Washington Commanders 31-21 Detroit Lions
- The 42 points scored in the second quarter is an NFL record in the play-offs – to the surprise of nobody!
- And it’s still not over…
Page 4
- Washington Commanders 31-21 Detroit Lions
- Jared Goff is back in for Detroit, and with 90 seconds left in the game there’s plenty of time for, what, one or two touchdowns the way this game is going?
- Washington Commanders 24-21 Detroit Lions
- Ndamukong Suh
- Former NFL defensive tackle and 2021 Super Bowl winner on Sky Sports
- This is a Tyson-Holyfield title match. They just keep getting back up.
- Washington Commanders 31-21 Detroit Lions
- Haha of course they can’t! There’s no defence allowed today as Jayden Daniels fires a touchdown throw to tight end Zach Ertz.
- Runningout of superlatives now for this game – offensively anyway as let’s be honest the defending is pretty ropey, but my word it’s entertaining!
- Daniels is just carving up this Detroit defence, admittedly it’s short-handed through injury, but still, this is a rookie quarterback!
- Washington Commanders 24-21 Detroit Lions
- Two plays and two rare moments of defensive competence as Detroit keep Jayden Daniels out of the end zone, can they make it three and give Dan Quinn a decision to make?
- Washington Commanders 24-21 Detroit Lions
- Time for a quick breather…. These two are swinging for the fences on almost every play, that’s what you get in play-off football with the season on the line.
- Washington Commanders 24-21 Detroit Lions
- This is just nuts now! Jayden Daniels unloads an absolute bomb downfield and Dyami Brown managed to take an unblievable catch down at the seven-yard line – despite having a Detroit defender’s hand squarely over his eyes!
- How did he see that? Let alone catch it. A word on the placement from Daniel there, right in the bread basket!
- Washington Commanders 24-21 Detroit Lions
- Jason Bell
- Former NFL cornerback on Sky Sports
- My goodness, what a play! And they did it with their back-up quarterback in.
- Washington Commanders 24-21 Detroit Lions
- NO WAY! It doesn’t matter that you have your back-up QB in when he just has to hand if off to your running back, who then reverses to Jameson Williams to take off on a mesmerising 61-yard touchdown run.
- No wonder Lions offensive coordinator is a wanted man for a head coaching job as he dials up plays like that. No starting QB? No problem, let’s just get a reverse going, with a whole team of blockers out there and let our sprinter run away for the score.
- Are you kidding me?
- Washington Commanders 24-14 Detroit Lions
- To add insult to injury, or injury to insult I suppose, Jared Goff is off the field having taken a huge hit on the interception return.
- Teddy Bridgewater comes in as back-up quarterback as things go from bad to worse for Detroit.
- Washington Commanders 24-14 Detroit Lions
- OK, who had Jared Goff throwing a pick six in your next touchdown bingo?
- Goff just lets his throw sails high a bit and Washington safety Quan Martin is on hand to gather the ball – and in the spirit of this game he’s not taking a knee but he’s off and returns it with interest by taking it to the house.
- That’s a 40-yard interception return touchdown.
- Washington Commanders 17-14 Detroit Lions
- Tom Brady
- Seven-time Super Bowl winner on FOX
- When you are the number one seed, playing against a wildcard team. You expect to have a lead in the second quarter. That mental toughness that Dan Campbell has preached, this is where it has to show up.
- Washington Commanders 17-14 Detroit Lions
- Ben Collins
- BBC Sport
- These are two of the best offences in the league and they’re showing why right now.
- That’s touchdowns on three straight drives in less than five minutes.
- This game is really living up to the hype.
- Washington Commanders 17-14 Detroit Lions
- We thought this incredible catch from Sam LaPorta would easily be the play of the game – but then Terry McLaurin said hold my Gatorade and added his Hollywood highlight reel score.
- Whatever next?
- Washington Commanders 17-14 Detroit Lions
- Yes, the tackling wasn’t great on that Terry McLaurin 58-yard touchdown, but it was a stellar effort and we’ve got a good old-fashioned shootout on our hands here folks!
- Washington Commanders 17-14 Detroit Lions
- Yikes! What are we watching here? Out of nowhere Terry McLaurin takes what is just a short screen pass, but he busts through a hole and is then off to the races!
- He stiff-arms a tackler as he scampers down the sideline then dives into the end zone for a sensational touchdown out of absolutely nothing!
- Washington Commanders 10-14 Detroit Lions
- Right Jayden Daniels, what have you got now? This could well be the shootout we hoped for. He finds Dyami Brown for a first down.
- Washington Commanders 10-14 Detroit Lions
- Jason Bell
- Former NFL cornerback on Sky Sports
- It was just playmakers everywhere for Detroit. They got the ball to the outside and those guys did the work.
- We’ve talked about their weapons… they’re delivering.
- Washington Commanders 10-14 Detroit Lions
- Tom Brady
- Seven-time Super Bowl winner on FOX
- What. A. Catch.
- Washington Commanders 10-14 Detroit Lions
- What a catch! Tight end Sam LaPorta sticks out a one of those big mitts of his and takes an insane one-handed touchdown grab from Jared Goff – who did something of a Patrick Mahomes as he let the throw go while he’s falling down when being tackled.
- Superb stuff all round! That’s LaPorta’s 18th touchdown in two seasons with the Lions.
- Washington Commanders 10-7 Detroit Lions
- Khalif Raymond takes a short pass and gets two excellent blocks from his team-mate to stride close to the end zone but is tackled just short.
Page 5
- Washington Commanders 10-7 Detroit Lions
- Jared Goff isn’t done going deep, and this time the throw to top receiver Amon-Ra St Brown is bang on the money for a huge 34-yard gain that flips the field and takes Detroit up to the Washington 29.
- Washington Commanders 10-7 Detroit Lions
- Jameson WIlliams is quick! Just in case you didn’t know, he shows his speed again by bursting clear but somehow Jared Goff manages to overthrow him and he can only get his finger tips to the ball.
- He’s the definittion of a home run hitter of a receiver in the NFL.
- Washington Commanders 10-7 Detroit Lions
- Jason Bell
- Former NFL cornerback on Sky Sports
- It showed everything you need to know about Jayden Daniels on that drive. He can deliver in the big moments.
- Washington Commanders 10-7 Detroit Lions
- Brian Robinson punches it in at the second attempt! He was stuffed and lost a yard on first down, but the big guys up front do a better job of making a hole second time around for him to find paydirt.
- Yes, they got a helpful penalty, but it’s still a big-time drive from these visiting underdogs, who now lead in Detroit.
- Washington Commanders 3-7 Detroit Lions
- Tom Brady
- Seven-time Super Bowl winner on FOX
- If no-one’s open, Daniels has so much confidence in his legs, to scramble out of the pocket and make positive yards. That allows the offence to make a lot of explosive plays and that pays dividends in the fourth quarter when the defence is tired.
- Washington Commanders 3-7 Detroit Lions
- Jayden Daniels can’t find a touchdown pass on third down, but there’s flag thrown in the end zone as Terry McLaurin was tripped over and the pass interference call gives them a fresh set of downs from the one-yard line.
- Washington Commanders 3-7 Detroit Lions
- Fourth and three from the nine – and of course Washington go for it, and Jayden Daniels completes it to veteran tight end Zach Ertz right over the middle who takes a tough catch down at the two.
- Ertz took a shot on that play and goes off the field as they try to punch this in.
- Washington Commanders 3-7 Detroit Lions
- Jayden Daniels has all day to throw on second down and he has time to wait for Dyami Brown to get down field and has no problems finding his man for huge gain down into the red zone.
- Here’s the path to Super Bowl 59, following Kansas City’s victory. Who will join them from this NFC match-up?

- The Commanders defence have been phenomenal. Look at the teans these guys came from, they have gone from strength to strength, their athletic ability. Look at who their head coach is – Dan Quinn is a defensive mastermind!
- Washington Commanders 3-7 Detroit Lions
- Brian Robinson picks up five yards as we reach the end of a pulsating first quarter – we’ve had a bit of everything there haven’t we!?
- Just when Detroit looked like they would steamroller Washington the Commanders’ defence came up big – that’s play-off football for you.
- Washington Commanders 3-7 Detroit Lions
- Huge! Jared Goff has the ball punched out of his hands by Dorance Armstrong as he comes sotrming through the Detroit offensive line and the ball is pounced on by Frankie Luvu.
- Washington get the ball back on their own 22 when the Lions looked destined to score again – that’s a massive play by the visiting defence.
- Washington Commanders 3-7 Detroit Lions
- Phoebe Schecter
- BBC Sport NFL columnist on Sky Sports
- One of the things the Lions have done well – It’s about making sure everybody in that building is coached to the same level. A lot of those back-ups to back-ups are now starters, and they understand the fundamentals. As long as you’ve got good communication you’ll be alright.
- Washington Commanders 3-7 Detroit Lions
- It’s been some season for Detroit’s Jahmyr Gibbs. The second-year running back led the league for total touchdowns scored (20) and set a franchise record by going 17 consecutive games with 70-plus scrimmage yards.
- Washington Commanders 3-7 Detroit Lions
- Boy he’s fast! Jahmyr Gibbs bursts free when he gets to the edge then turns the corner and puts his foot on the gas and he’s gone!
- That’s a 33-yard run to add to the tally…
- Washington Commanders 3-7 Detroit Lions
- Detroit’s offence is back on the field and tight end Sam LaPorta gets his first catch of the day for a first down.
- Washington Commanders 3-7 Detroit Lions
- Zane Gonzalez nails his kick from 47 yards to get Washington on the board. Easy to say now but they would’ve only been a point behind had they kicked it earlier.
- They’ve moved the ball well though on the two opening drives.
- Washington Commanders 0-7 Detroit Lions
- Jayden Daniels with a bullet over the middle for Dyami Brown who looks to have gathered it but he just can’t keep hold under intense pressure.
- Big time throw from Daniels in the face of the blitz, but after it’s dropped Washington will go for the field goal this time.
- Washington Commanders 0-7 Detroit Lions
- Third down and 10 for Jayden Daniels and Washington spread them out with five wide receivers, and the protection is excellent so the rookie finds his man for a first down.
- With accuracy like Daniels has, any kind of time in the pocket usually results in a completed pass.
- Washington Commanders 0-7 Detroit Lions
- Ndamukong Suh
- Former NFL defensive tackle and 2021 Super Bowl winner on Sky Sports
- As you watch this offense there’s a lot of motions but at the core of it it’s bully-ball. They were like ‘feel our wrath. Instead of biting kneecaps we’re going to run through your kneecaps’.
Page 6

- That was a lightning strike from Detroit, specifically Jahmyr Gibbs and just the way it was constructed really had Washington at sixes and sevens as the momentum just kept on building.
- Detroit were up to the line quickly and dominated Washington’s defensive front – but it’s the speed and power of Gibbs, who can be just as effective in the run or pass game, that’s so tough to stop.
- The Lions just get up a head of steam and run over teams, and they did that to the Commanders right there.
- Washington Commanders 0-7 Detroit Lions
- Tom Brady
- Seven-time Super Bowl winner on FOX
- Jahmyr Gibbs is just an absolutely scary dude, whether you hand it to him or throw it to him, he can go the distance.
- Every defensive coordinator in the league is scared of him because of his explosiveness.
- Washington Commanders 0-7 Detroit Lions
- Guess who!? Yes, Jahmyr Gibbs gets the hand-off and he beats a man before powering into the end zone for the opening touchdown of the game.
- Touchdown number 21 for Gibbs this season, and it won’t be the last! That drive right there just explains why Washington went for it on fourth down before, as they know they’ll need to score big points to keep up with this offence.
- Washington Commanders 0-0 Detroit Lions
- Jahmyr Gibbs explodes into action with a 15-yard run followed by a 23-yard catch as he shows just how dangerous he can be.
- Tack on a nine-yard rush after that and Detroit are right on the goal line and looking to score now after that impact from Gibbs.
- Washington Commanders 0-0 Detroit Lions
- Jameson Williams is a speedster for the Lions and he shows his pace by getting free for a 19-yard completion by Jared Goff.
- Washington Commanders 0-0 Detroit Lions
- Ndamukong Suh
- Former NFL defensive tackle and 2021 Super Bowl winner on Sky Sports
- It’s an intersting call. I would have taken a field goal and taken the points. It looks like there was a misscue with that quarterback sneak.
- Washington Commanders 0-0 Detroit Lions
- Uh oh! Marcus Mariota comes onto the field as Washington go for it on fourth-and-one to make it two quarterbacks on the field.
- It shapes up to be a QB sneak but once snapped Mariota is looking to fake it and flick it back to Jayden Daniels, but he’s wrapped up by the Detroit defence and Washington turn it over on downs.
- They were on the Detroit 28 as well so in very kickable range but Dan Quinn opted to be aggressive – that’s the only way they’ll keep up with Detroit you fancy.

- After going 4-13 last season, Washington have improved to 12-5 and claimed a play-off win, with Jayden Daniels set to be named Offensive Rookie of the Year.
- Detroit were the league’s highest scorers as quarterback Jared Goff led the Lions to a historic season. Goff had the fourth-best pass completion rate of all-time, with only Joe Burrow having more passing yards and only Burrow, Lamar Jackson and Baker Mayfield having more touchdown passes.

- Detroit started the season with an overtime win over the Los Angeles Rams, who they beat in last season’s play-offs, before losing 20-16 at home to Tampa Bay.
- The Lions were then roaring, reeling off an 11-game win streak to set a franchise record for consecutive wins, despite having as many as 16 players injured at one point.
- In what was billed as a potential Super Bowl rehearsal, Buffalo won 48-42 in Detroit, but the Lions won their next two to set up a winner-takes-all clash with divisional rivals Minnesota.
- The Lions prevailed to clinch the NFC’s number one seed and end the season with a host of franchise firsts:
- Number one Conference seed
- Back-to-back division champions
- Back-to-back seasons with 10+ wins
- Swept division (6-0)
- Washington Commanders @ Detroit Lions (01:00 GMT)
- After finishing last season with a 4-13 record, Washington came into the season with a new head coach in Dan Quinn and a rookie quarterback in Jayden Daniels.
- They lost 37-20 at Tampa Bay in week one, but the Commanders won seven of their next eight games, before a run of three straight defeats left them with a 7-5 record.
- Washington then won their last five games of the season – the last four by six points or fewer – to finish behind the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC East and clinch a wildcard spot.
- The Commanders then went to Tampa Bay and claimed their first play-off win since 2006. They were the only wildcard team to win last week, kicking a field goal as time expired to make it five straight games they have won on the final play.

- “Everybody’s got to sacrifice something, everybody got to do something different, put their mind on one thing. We’ve got two games, just go out there and battle.

- CJ Stroud takes a very careful knee due to his injury and the celebrations can start as the Kansas City Chiefs make it to the AFC Championship game for a seventh straight year.
- The Texans slip to 0-6 in the Divisional Round while Patrick Mahomes is now 7-0 in this stage of the play-offs to keep his record of getting to at least the AFC title game in every year he’s been a starter in Kansas City.
- Quite remarkable.
- Houston Texans 14-23 Kansas City Chiefs
- Oh, what’s this? Chiefs punter Matt Araiza doesn’t kick the ball from his own goal line, and instea goes on a long run in his own end zone and eventually out of the side, which gives the Texans a two-point safety but takes valuable time off the lock.

- Houston Texans 12-23 Kansas City Chiefs
- The kick looked a bit low from Ka’imi Fairbairn and in fact it was Leo Chenal who got a big hand on it from the line. The Chiefs really know how to pressure these kicks when they need to.

- The kick from 27 yards is no problem for Harrison Butker as he splits the uprights and sends KC into an 11-point lead and with just 4:38 left on the lock it’s crunch time for Houston.
- The Texans need quick points on this next drive to stay in this.
- Houston Texans 12-20 Kansas City Chiefs
- Xavier Worthy takes another lovely spinning catch on third down and he looks just inches short of the first, but Andy Reid will take no chances and sends out his field goal unit.

- Chiefs get the ball back off the punt and Kareem Hunt gets some rare joy on the ground with an 11-yard run for a first down.
- Houston Texans 12-20 Kansas City Chiefs
- Really bad collision between Jaylen Watson and Justin Reid on that last play as they both converged on Nico Collins and ram into each other – with Reid looking like he’s come off worse.
- Both big players for this Chiefs defensive unit so this is a concern.
- Houston Texans 12-20 Kansas City Chiefs
- The Texans haven’t gone three-and-out all game long, and that’s a terrible time for their first one as CJ Stroud can’t connect with his receiver Nico Collins and Houston will have to kick it away from right on their own goal line.
- Houston Texans 12-20 Kansas City Chiefs
- Back to the Texans with over eight minutes left to play – they’ve moved the ball pretty comfortably at times so they’ll fancy something here. The start on their own 11.
- Houston Texans 12-20 Kansas City Chiefs
- Not for the first time Houston’s defence stands up with their backs to the wall and it’s a quick three-and-out by the Chiefs who are really struggling on early downs as they just can’t run the ball.
- The fancy schemes to get Xavier Worthy on the ball aren’t working either – KC look at their best when Patrick Mahomes just looks for Travis Kelce or tries to stretch the field with his long passing, as in and around the line of scrimmage Houston are dominating.

- You’ve got to look at CJ Stroud and think you’re no longer a rookie, you’re in the play-offs, this is the fourth sack you’ve taken when you just can’t take a sack. You’re third and long, you’re in field goal range. You’ve got to be able to learn from these mistakes.

- That is elite style defence. That goes back to how they were able to win last year, because that Chiefs defence stepped up and got the ball back to the offence.
- Houston Texans 12-20 Kansas City Chiefs
- Oh no! Huge play here as the Texans go for it on fourth down but the pas rush gets through again and George Karlaftis chases down CJ Stroud and sacks him back at the Houston 44.
- Great defensive call from Steve Spagnuolo but Stroud has to throw that ball away and not take the sack there.
- Houston Texans 12-20 Kansas City Chiefs
- Justin Reid is the extra man on the rush and he races through the line right up the gut to force CJ Stroud to just throw it away.
- Houston Texans 12-20 Kansas City Chiefs
- Nico Collins gets back in on the act with a big 24-yard catch from a tough CJ Stroud throw as the Houston QB was about to get hammered by the Chiefs pass rush.
- The second-year man hasn’t had his best stuff this season but he’s showing up big time in the play-offs – really impressive for a young player.

- Wow. Wow. Wow! Unbelievable! Patrick Mahomes steps up in the pocket but he’s tackled – although as he falls he throws the ball diving forward like Superman and finds a wide open Travis Kelce in the middle of the end zone.
- I mean, we shouldn’t really be surprised but the awareness of Mahomes and the guts to try and extend that play when he’s on his way to the ground was just magificent.

- The officials are going to protect Patrick Mahomes. But Patrick Mahomes was willing to get involved, he scrambled back inside instead of going out of bounds.

- They came out running the ball, they wanted to establish dominance and they sealed the deal with the touchdown.

Stroud then connects with Xavier Hutchinson in the slot to bring up third and one, but an illegal motion call moves them back five. On seeing the replays, it looks like Hutchinson should have had a first down.
- No bother though, as Stroud scrambles for a first.

- And that’s half-time in a good contest so far, both defences looking really sharp, especially Houston’s, with just that Travis Kelce moment of magic really making the difference so far.
- The Texans will get the ball back in the second half though so, as long as CJ Stroud’s injury isn’t too bad, they should have a chance to get the first points on the board as they’ve moved the ball well offensively but just stalled at the wrong times.
- Should be a fun second half coming up.
- Houston Texans 6-13 Kansas City Chiefs
- Much better kick from Ka’imi Fairbairn this time as he sneaks it inside the right post to reduce the gap to seven points with just about 16 seconds left in the half.
- Houston will also get the ball first in the second half too.
- Houston Texans 3-13 Kansas City Chiefs
- Shaq Mason is flagged for holding which negates a CJ Stroud run that was close to the first down marker, and now Houston are backed up on a third and 23.
- The Texans manage to run it to the KC 30 so Fairburn will have another go from about 48 yards just before half-time.
- Houston Texans 3-13 Kansas City Chiefs
- Oh no! CJ Stroud can’t get the ball out and he’s got no time whatsoever to look for his checkdown as he’s swallowed up by the Chiefs pass rush and scked for a loss of nine yards.
- Houston Texans 3-13 Kansas City Chiefs
- Brilliant catch by John Metchie in serious traffic – he was hit hard as well as he dived on the ball and that’s a 24-yard gain that drives Houston all the way to the 25 and edging towards the red zone.
- Should be points here – but seven or three?
- Houston Texans 3-13 Kansas City Chiefs
- The Texans just cross over midfield and tiptoe into Chiefs territory as we hit the two-minute warning. It’ll be second down and eight when we return.
- Houston Texans 3-13 Kansas City Chiefs
- CJ Stroud is playing pretty well here under the circumstances – as he hits John Metchie with an 11-yard gain on third down to move the chains.
- That was vital as we near the end of the half, as giving Mahomes one more possession is the last thing Houston want to do.

- This is where Kelce shines, this second gear he is able to move into. But watching that play, it kills me. The defence wait for one another to make a tackle. At this time of year it’s about who makes the fewest mistakes. Now the Chiefs are warming up. This could be dangerous.
- Houston Texans 3-13 Kansas City Chiefs
- They can punch it in! Kareem Hunt bundles into the end zone from close range. It’s a one-yard score, his eighth touchdown of the season and it puts the Chiefs in control.
- All set up by Travis Kelce who, surprise, surprise, has turned up with a big game in the play-offs.

- When you kick the ball in these cold temperatures, the air in the ball is different. That’s why you get the kickers out early and get as many (kicks) in there as possible.
- Houston Texans 3-6 Kansas City Chiefs
- Play-off Travis Kelce has turned up! Patrick Mahomes throws the ball short over the middle foe the first down, but Kelce isn’t done as he shakes a tackle, stiff-arms another defender and rumbles on 49 yards just short of the end zone.
- Houston Texans 3-6 Kansas City Chiefs
- Hollywood Brown makes a Hollywood catch from the Patrick Mahomes bomb, but the ball is dragged out of his arms by the defender as he hits the ground and it’s ruled incomplete.
- Houston Texans 3-6 Kansas City Chiefs
- Ka’imi Fairbairn is a good kicker usually but his attempt from 55 yards is a complete mess, as it’s low and wide from the start and never has a prayer of reaching.
- It’s cold and windy out there but that’s still a poor effort – and maybe a bad call to go for such a long kick there when Houston’s defence is playing so well.
- Houston Texans 3-6 Kansas City Chiefs
- CJ Stroud has the ball stripped from his grasp by Charles Omenihu on third down but the Texans manage to recover the ball. It’s a loss of three but Houston are still going to go for the long field goal…
- Houston Texans 3-6 Kansas City Chiefs
- Nothing wrong with CJ Stroud’s leg as he takes off for a huge 28-yard scramble when he was so nearly sacked by the onrushing Chiefs defenders – but they left a big hole and he really got on his bike to convert a long third down.
- He even lowered the shoulder on a Chiefs defender to finish it off too…
- Houston Texans 3-6 Kansas City Chiefs
- Right, Houston back out there and starting with a nice run by Joe MIxon for a first down. Neither side have managed much on the ground so far, and it can make such a huge difference if you can get that run game going.

- Xavier Worthy was the fastest man ever at the NFL Combine last year so the Chiefs spent a first-round pick on him, and he’s showing just what he can do if he can get the ball with space.

- The Texans defence been phenomenal really. You’re going against a team that’s looking at a three-peat. Ultimately you’ve got to leave everything on the line. They’re trying to really take away anything Mahomes wants to do.

- Hello Chris Jones! The All Pro Chiefs defensive leader comes up big time with a sack on CJ Stroud for a loss of 12 yards forcing Houston to punt.
- He’s just one of those big play, big mometns guys Jones, who always seems to come up trumps when his side need him. Great player

- CJ Stroud goes back to his top receiver Nico Collins and he takes a tough catch around midfield. He’s getting great joy with those routes down the middle.
- Stroud then fires a quick pass to Xavier Hucthinson again under pressure from an outside blitz, but this time the receiver can’t grab the ball – that’s a big drop.
Page 12
- Houston Texans 3-6 Kansas City Chiefs
- CJ Stroud limps out onto the field and clearly he’s being troubled by that injury – he still fires a pass under pressure but it’s not collected by Xavier Hutchinson.

- It’s not even close, it’s a terrible call from the referees. Will Anderson pushes his hands and hits Mahomes’ throwing arm first, then leans into the chest. Mahomes knows how to act.
- Houston Texans 3-6 Kansas City Chiefs
- Troy Aikman
- Three-time Super Bowl winner on ESPN/ABC
- The key to this game for Houston is being able to disrupt Mahomes, being able to get to him and rush four. If he’s back their holding on to the ball, this is a defensive front that thinks they can win
- Houston Texans 3-6 Kansas City Chiefs
- Harrison Butker nails a 36-yarder to restore the lead for the Chiefs but again that’s some really hot red zone defence from Houston – who seem to really ramp up the pressure just when they need to.
- Houston Texans 3-3 Kansas City Chiefs
- Will Anderson shows tremendous athleticism to drag Xavier Worthy down behind the line, before Patrick Mahomes also goes down on the scramble under all kinds of pressure the Texans defence really turns up the heat.
- Mahomes is almost sacked on third down too so the field goal unit has to come out.
- Houston Texans 3-3 Kansas City Chiefs
- Xavier Worthy, what have you done!?
- Patrick Mahomes is hit as he makes the throw and the ball’s ab it higher than he;d like, slightly behind Worthy, who spins in the air and somehow takes the catch.
- Houston Texans 3-3 Kansas City Chiefs
- The Chiefs take advantage of that penalty with Patrick Mahomes hitting Travis Kelce down the right sideline for 23 yards.
- We’ve seen that before…
- Houston Texans 3-3 Kansas City Chiefs
- Patrick Mahomes’ third-down pass is off the mark, but Houston’s Will Anderson comes steaming in and whacks Mahomes. He’s flag for roughing the passer – a hit to Mahomes’ head area – and that costs the Texans 15 yards and a first down.
- Big, big penalty.
- Houston Texans 3-3 Kansas City Chiefs
- Fals start from the Chiefs offence on third down is not a good sign – surprise, surprise it’s Jawaan Taylor.
- Houston Texans 3-3 Kansas City Chiefs
- Isiah Pacheco with a nice gain of seven on first down, thanks to a little help from his friends. Really interesting to see how the Chiefs have transitioned from highpowered passing attack to a defensive run-first outfit.
- Houston Texans 3-3 Kansas City Chiefs
- CJ Stroud is limping heavily on the sidelines, looks like it could be an ankle problem or lower leg at least. One to keep an eye on.
- Houston Texans 3-3 Kansas City Chiefs
- Nico Collins is going to be a key guy throughout this game. He is by far the best Texans receiver at beating the kind of coverage the Chiefs run. I expect him to see a lot of attention.
- Houston Texans 3-3 Kansas City Chiefs
- Ooo – CJ Stroud can’t complete a pass out to the left and he’s almost intercepted. He follows that with a third-down scramble which goes nowhere and the Texans settle for a 30-yard field goal from Ka’imi Fairbairn to level the game.
- He looks like he’s limping off the field though.

- Houston Texans 0-3 Kansas City Chiefs
- Too easy for CJ Stroud to complete a crucial third down as Nico Collins is unchallenged at the line and can just run a quick slant over the middle for 13 yards and a first down.
- Houston Texans 0-3 Kansas City Chiefs
- Tight end Dalton Schultz breaks free down the middle and gathers a 34-yard pass from CJ Stroud. Always baffles me how these big tight ends manage to evade coverage but Schultz gallops away down to the Chiefs’ 35.

- CJ Stroud was the second-most sacked quarterback during the 2024 regular season, and he was sacked three more times during the Wild Card victory against the LA Chargers.
- He’s been kept clean so far though…
- Houston Texans 0-3 Kansas City Chiefs
- First down for Houston after a nice short pass from CJ Stroud, getting the ball out nice and early as he has to do tonight.
- Houston Texans 0-3 Kansas City Chiefs
- Texans’s quarterback CJ Stroud on what his team needs to do to win today: “Every play matters. It’s now how you start, it’s about getting to the fourth quarter and winning that.
- “Taking care of the football – overall they are a great defence and it’s going to be a hell of a battle.”
- It’s already a battle for Houston…

- To be able to come out defensively and force a field goal attempt after a big kick-off return – that’s big time from this Texans defence

- The Texans offense may not have convinced this season, but the defence certainly has. That’s a strong stand after a dodgy start by the Houston special teams unit.
- Only the Minnesota Vikings made more interceptions (24) than the Texans during the 2024 regular season.

- You’re going to have to establish the run. And short, crisp passes. You want third down to be manageable
- Houston Texans 0-3 Kansas City Chiefs
- The Texans have played in the Divisional Round five times in their history – they’re 0-5 in those games. They’re also 0-5 on the road in the play-offs so history is not with them tonight. And it’s been a tough start already.
- Houston Texans 0-3 Kansas City Chiefs
- Wow, breathless start ends with Patrick Mahomes taking a shot to the end zone onf third and 11, but it’s way over the receiver so Harrison Butker trots out to kick a 32-yard field goal and put the Chiefs ahead.
- Make no mistake though, that’s a huge win for Houston after that start.
- Houston Texans 0-0 Kansas City Chiefs
- Patrick Mahomes is a perfect 6-0 at this stage of the play-offs, with some pretty tasty stats under his belt as well – it’s a big challenge for this Houston defence tonight.
- Houston Texans 0-0 Kansas City Chiefs
- Huge, huge play for the Chiefs with the kick-off return going 63 yards and almost all the way to the house!
- Nikko Remigio it was who twisted and turned his way deep into Houston territory – with then a penalty on the Texans pushing them back to their on 13 already.
- Some start from KC.
- Houston Texans 0-0 Kansas City Chiefs
- Houston get us under way with the kick-off so Patrick Mahomes has the ball first.

- He is phenomenal. There’s not many people like Mahomes. He has this undeniable hunger and when he gets to the play-offs he steps it up a gear. It’s easy to drop off after such a long season but he just excels in these moments.

- Patrick Mahomes’ career trajectory is almost a mirror image of Tom Brady’s after eight seasons and, at just 29, the Chiefs quarterback has a great chance of bettering the NFL legend’s career.
- Mahomes still needs four more Super Bowl wins but if he can play until 45 like Brady he has every chance.
- Can he and the Chiefs make it a three-peat this year and a fourth Super Bowl title?
- Take a look at this comparison between Brady and Mahomes.

- The Texans come into this match-up off the back of a superb defensive showing in the Wildcard round.
- The Texans defence picked off Justin Herbert four times on the way to a dominant 32-12 victory; he’d thrown just three during the entire regular season.
- While the defensive unit has been among the best in the NFL this year, DeMeco Ryans’ team have been less convincing on the other side of the ball.
- CJ Stroud hasn’t lived up to his impressive rookie season in 2023, though he still managed to lead the Texans to the AFC South title with a 10-7 record.
- Beating the Chiefs is a big ask, but if there’s one defence that can keep Patrick Mahomes quiet, it’s the Texans’.

- Patrick Mahomes has not been slinging it around, he even missed out on the Pro Bowl as Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson got all the MVP shouts – but they could not match his 15 wins.
- There was just signs of Mahomes and his offence finding a stride late on too, with Isiah Pacheco back from injury, DeAndre Hopkins and Xavier Worthy creating more, and the belated appearance of Marquise ‘Hollywood’ Brown giving them a huge boost.
- The Chiefs leaned on their defence A LOT in the season, and always managed to find ways to win, with last-minute field goals and blocking last-minute field goals among the many different ways they found to get the ‘W’.
- And that’s what it’s all about, right? And nobody did it better than the Chiefs this season. When it comes to play-off football, winning is all that matters.

- The Chiefs faced the Texans at Arrowhead in the Divisional Round five years ago in an amazing turnaround game that saw Houston race into an early 24-0 lead witrh Deshaun Watson producing a stunning game at quarterback.
- Patrick Mahomes led a stirring comeback though, scoring 28 unanswered points in the second quarter on the way to a 51-31 victory that boosted them on the way to a first Super Bowl of the Mahomes-Andy Reid era.
- Something similar tonight would do us, right?

- BBC Radio 5 Live
- American football reporter Anthony Wootton on BBC Radio 5 Live: “The Kansas City Chiefs lost two games all season and in the final game they didn’t play their starters so really, they lost only one game that mattered. But they’ve won ugly, they’ve won some very close games, so they’ve almost flattered to deceive this season.
- “But you can’t discount them, you can’t write them off, because they have that winning instinct that we saw with Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. It’s instinctive and it’s embedded in them. They’re an exciting team.
- “They’ve got the coach and they’ve got their star players. Patrick Mahomes is the ultimate sportsman and could eventually overtake Tom Brady as the greatest all-time quarterback.”

- Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Chris Jones and a number of other starters have not played since Christmas Day as the Chifs opted to rest them for the final game of the regular season.
- Then followed last week’s bye, so there’s a chance for a lot of rest and injuries to heal, but will they suffer from any ring rust after so long out of action?
- Head coach Andy Reid has a great record after a bye week and they have done the same plan and won a Super Bowl before so you would think they will be ready. Let’s see how they start.
