  5. I think Graham Potter will be happy.
  6. Out of possession they look hard to break down. When you have a new manager come in and you want to play a certain way it’s really draining.
  7. It will take a bit of time, they did it great for 60 minutes, but then Aston Villa’s quality showed in the end.

  9. Villa got lucky. West Ham lost another two attacking players in the first half and a corner equaliser that never was.

  13. It took Villa a long time and they realised they had to show more energy.
  14. Substitutions made a huge difference and West Ham ran out of ideas.

  16. It is!

  19. Aston Villa 2-1 West Ham
  20. Ings was only a few yards out but there were plenty of defenders in the way and he was falling as he hit it.
  21. Will that be the last chance?

  25. West Ham wanted that to fall to Danny Ings.
  26. Ings cannot sort his feet out.
  27. Aston Villa 2-1 West Ham
  28. The initial cross doesn’t beat the first man.
  29. But West Ham do eventually chip it into the middle and Danny Ings strikes over after a Robin Olsen punch.
  30. Aston Villa 2-1 West Ham
  31. Not done yet Darren. Aaron Cresswell’s shot is blocked behind for a corner.

  33. New manager, but same old West Ham collapse I’m afraid.

  35. Aston Villa 2-1 West Ham
  36. Three minutes of added time played. Three minutes to go.
  37. Aston Villa 2-1 West Ham
  38. That’ll relieve the pressure.
  39. Carlos Soler has a pop from way out but wallops it straight into row z.

  43. Black shirts flying everywhere.
  44. Danny Ings was going to hit the target and Morgan Rogers is there to clear.
  45. Aston Villa 2-1 West Ham
  46. But Aaron Wan-Bissaka makes amends by putting in a decent cross which is flicked on to Danny Ings at the back post.
  47. It’s a proper chance for the English striker, but Morgan Rogers is doing his defensive duties and makes a fine block.
  48. Graham Potter has his head in his hands.
  49. Aston Villa 2-1 West Ham
  50. Six minutes added on. West Ham’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka needlessly gives the ball away.
  51. Aston Villa 2-1 West Ham
  52. The TV cameras are back on Unai Emery. I’m no lipreader but I think he’s saying “calm things down” to his players.
  53. They remain very open in midfield, going forward when they can, on the hunt for a third.
  54. Image source, Getty Images
  55. Aston Villa 2-1 West Ham
  56. Two minutes left of normal time and imagine we’ll get a fair chunk added on.
  57. Morgan Rogers tries a pass into the middle on the counter but it’s cleared by Max Kilman.
  58. Aston Villa 2-1 West Ham
  59. Aston Villa almost get caught out playing out from the back but Morgan Rogers just about clears the ball away.
  60. West Ham are still pushing, but look very deflated.
  61. Aston Villa 2-1 West Ham
  62. Corner kick Aston Villa, a chance to wrap up the tie.
  63. Emi Buendia does well to meet Youri Tielemans’ cross at the near post but his header is straight at the keeper.
  64. Aston Villa 2-1 West Ham
  65. Konstantinos Mavropanos limps off. He’s replaced by Carlos Soler.
  66. Brazilian Luis Guilherme comes on for Edson Alvarez.
  67. Aston Villa 2-1 West Ham
  68. Konstantinos Mavropanos has stayed down. He’s receiving treatment.
  69. We have a break in play which might do the Hammers a favour. They’ve looked lost these past 10 minutes.

  2. Wycombe look like they’re not afraid to see Portsmouth at the next level next season.
  3. Aston Villa 2-1 West Ham
  4. A slip from Konstantinos Mavropanos gifts Morgan Rogers the ball and Villa have a two vs one.
  5. Rogers’ ball forward for Ollie Watkins is too close to Max Kilman though who makes a key interception.
  6. Crucial that.
  7. Aston Villa 2-1 West Ham
  8. Graham Potter makes another change. Off goes youngster Ollie Scarles, replaced by full-back Aaron Cresswell.

  10. West Ham had this won. Unfortunately they have stopped playing attacking football when they were completely dominating and have paid the price.

  12. Aston Villa 2-1 West Ham
  13. So close to 3-1 Aston Villa!
  14. They looks so good on the counter now as Jacob Ramsey strikes the ball beautifully from the edge of the box and sees his shot clatter against the post.
  15. West Ham are starting to collapse.
  16. Aston Villa 2-1 West Ham
  17. With so much going on I’ve not been able to tell you about the three changes Aston Villa made between the two goals.
  18. Matty Cash, Leon Bailey and Boubacar Kamara went off. On came Kosta Nedeljkovic, Jacob Ramsey and Emiliano Buendia.
  19. Aston Villa 2-1 West Ham

  22. It’s amazing when you use the ball and pass the ball at pace.
  23. Youri Tielemans passed the ball into Emi Beundia, he faces the play and passes to Ollie Watkins.
  24. Watkins goes into the box and pings it across the box and Rogers is there.
  25. That’s how you play football.

  27. Wycombe 2-0 Portsmouth
  28. A poor performance from Portsmouth and two well-taken goals from Wycombe see the League One side complete an upset and book their spot in the fourth round of the FA Cup.
  29. It’s an upset in terms of the fact Portsmouth are in the league above, but it’s worth remembering the two are having very different fortunes in their respective leagues.
  30. Wycombe were by far the better side in the first half. Neither did anything of note in the second.

  39. They’ve turned it around!
  40. It’s so simple. Ollie Watkins bursts into the area, does well to keep hold of the ball, and squares it to Morgan Rogers who pokes a shot first time into the bottom corner.
  41. Aston Villa 1-1 West Ham.
  42. Nick Mashiter
  43. BBC Sport football news reporter at Villa Park
  44. Villa had dominated since half-time but have earned a slice of good fortune as it should not have been a corner in the build-up to the leveller.
  45. Image source, Getty Images
  46. Aston Villa 1-1 West Ham
  47. Just seen the replay and West Ham are right to feel aggrieved. Boubacar Kamara’s shot was not deflected and instead went straight out of play. It should have been a goal kick.
  48. There was little in Lucas Paqueta’s clash with Ezri Konsa though.
  49. Aston Villa 1-1 West Ham
  50. West Ham are furious with the referee. They think Villa’s corner should never have been awarded.
  51. Lucas Paqueta also went down as the cross came in but no foul was given.
  52. Wycombe 2-0 Portsmouth
  53. Four minutes added on at the end of this one. It looks like it’s Wycombe who will be heading into the fourth round.

  58. Good play from Villa.
  59. Corner routine from the training ground. Tyrone Mings goes to the near post and he flicks it on. Ian Maatsen hits the ball so cleanly.
  60. Now we have a game on!
  61. Wycombe 2-0 Portsmouth
  62. “We want a shot,” chant the Portsmouth fans.
  63. That sums up Pompey’s performance this evening.
  64. Amadou Onana (71 mins)
  65. Image source, Reuters
  66. Aston Villa are level!
  67. It comes from a corner as Ian Maatsen fires a low shot which Lukasz Fabianski saves.
  68. But following up on the rebound is substitute Amadou Onana who is quickest to react to tap home.

  70. Youri Tielemans is having an absolute shocker this evening. Can’t remember the last time I saw a player have a game where so little was coming off. That being said, he’ll absolutely score now.
  71. Aston Villa 0-1 West Ham
  72. Image source, Getty Images
  73. Aston Villa are going route one now, why not?
  74. Robin Olsen pings a lovely ball over the top for Matty Cash but Ollie Watkins can’t turn in his cross.
  75. Moments later Youri Tielemans has another shot blocked, and Ian Maatsen hits an effort which Lukasz Fabianski keeps out by diving to his right.
  76. Wycombe 2-0 Portsmouth
  77. Another Wycombe substitution. David Wheeler replaces Beryly Lubala.

  6. I think this is a Emi Buendia situation – he is the one who can open the door for Aston Villa.
  7. Aston Villa 0-1 West Ham
  8. Another Villa chance. Ollie Watkins gets the ball on the half-turn and then squares it for Leon Bailey who has a shot blocked.
  9. Youri Tielemans is following up on the rebound but fizzes his effort just wide.

  14. They’re stopping the danger at the source.

  16. Aston Villa 0-1 West Ham
  17. Aston Villa want a penalty as a Youri Tielemans cross is blocked by Edson Alvarez on the slide and the ball then bobbles into the West Ham player’s arm.
  18. The ref doesn’t give it and there’s no VAR. It’s the right decision, a penalty there would have been very harsh.
  19. Villa are improving though.
  20. Aston Villa 0-1 West Ham

  27. West Ham are playing really good football.
  28. They’re forcing the black shirts out of their position and every player wants the ball.
  29. Aston Villa 0-1 West Ham
  30. Image source, Getty Images
  31. The Holte End are begging the Villa players to shoot every time they get the ball in the final third.
  32. Instead they’re playing a patient game, passing it around. But West Ham are so organised tonight. There are no gaps!
  33. Aston Villa 0-1 West Ham
  34. I half agree Rob, thanks for getting in touch.
  35. Villa’s kit is nice. Their performance though….well, as you say.

  37. Villa not at the races tonight. Horrible performance and horrible kit!
  38. This is so pedestrian from Villa. Every time Mings goes to pass he holds a sign up letting West Ham know who he’s playing it to!
  39. Wycombe 2-0 Portsmouth
  40. It hasn’t been the most enthralling of second halves. No shots on target for either side.

  42. Wycombe 2-0 Portsmouth
  43. Portsmouth make their fifth substitution, with Harry Clout coming on to make his senior debut.
  44. Paddy Lane goes off.

  55. Josh Scowen, Richard Kone and Fred Onyedinma replace them.
  56. Aston Villa 0-1 West Ham
  57. Here we go. West Ham have a chance to pump the ball into the box with a wide free-kick.
  58. Morgan Rogers brings down Aaron Wan-Bissaka – still playing right wing – and gets a yellow card.
  59. Image source, Reuters
  60. Aston Villa 0-1 West Ham
  61. The TV people have zoomed in on Unai Emery who has both his arms outstretched as if to say to his players “why aren’t you doing better?”.
  62. He doesn’t look impressed.
  63. Aston Villa 0-1 West Ham
  64. Image source, Getty Images
  65. Great feet from Morgan Rogers who gets his side out of danger with a neat turn in his own third.
  66. Villa then counter but it ends with a tame shot straight at the keeper.
  67. Wycombe 2-0 Portsmouth
  68. We are into the final 20 minutes at Adams Park. Have Wycombe already got this one all wrapped up?

  70. Whatever the result tonight it’s West Ham best performance of the season so far. Potter should have replaced David Moyes in the first place and we wouldn’t be in this mess.

Page 4

  2. Wahey!
  3. The West Ham fans are cheering as Ian Maatsen takes a wild swing at the ball from a tight angle that he gets all wrong. The ball trickles off him and out for a goal kick.

  11. Very impressed with Lucas Paqueta’s work rate and finishing. If he has a second half as good as the first he could be my man of the match.
  12. Aston Villa 0-1 West Ham
  13. Out of possession West Ham are playing a 6-2-2, with Wan-Bissaka and Lucas Paqueta as wing-backs.
  14. It’s unusual, but it works. Aston Villa are still struggling to break the Hammers down.
  15. Villa Park is cold, and quiet.
  16. Wycombe 2-0 Portsmouth
  17. Daniel Harvie and Christian Hardee are booked for that.
  18. Nothing comes of the eventual corner, but there are other melees in the box when it’s taken.
  19. Aston Villa 0-1 West Ham
  20. We go again.
  21. For now, Aaron Wan-Bissaka is lining up as a right winger.

  24. We’ve been waiting for a good while for Portsmouth to take a corner. There’s been a lot of pushing and shoving in the box.
  25. HT: Aston Villa 0-1 West Ham
  26. We’re about to resume but just beforehand West Ham are making a change.
  27. Vladimir Coufal is replacing Crysencio Summerville who did go down off the ball in the first half.

  37. Villa always seem to get hit by teams on the new manager bounce. And next up is Everton.
  38. Wycombe 2-0 Portsmouth
  39. Still waiting to see anything of any real note in the second half. It’s much more equal, with Portsmouth holding much more of the ball than they did.

  44. Neil: When West Ham played Spurs they did not look right. Tonight, they look different, solid and organised. Surely that can only mean one thing, the previous manager was clearly not good enough. Potter has only had one session!
  45. Wycombe 2-0 Portsmouth
  46. There hasn’t been much in the way of action in the second half yet, but it’s been a bit better from Portsmouth. They’re managing to hold Wycombe back more than they did before the break.

  51. The way West Ham have set-up – it’s like all the cogs are communicating to each other.
  52. It is very well done and it is very Potter-like.
  53. Wycombe 2-0 Portsmouth
  54. Today was Rob Atkinson’s first start after almost two years out with an anterior cruciate ligament injury, of course, so that’s likely an enforced change to manage his minutes.

  58. Villa have a task and they keep refusing the pass that is on.
  59. Tyrone Mings has refused it and Matty Cash has refused it.
  60. West Ham have started this game confident and they are one up.
  61. Wycombe 2-0 Portsmouth
  62. Three changes for the visitors at the break. They want to turn things around.
  63. Goalkeeper Jordan Archer is replaced by Nicolas Schmid. Ryley Towler and Andre Dozzell are also on, replacing Freddie Potts and Rob Atkinson.

  68. Aston Villa finished the half strongly and West Ham had some moments of panic but the Hammers deserve the lead at the break.
  69. The hosts are yet to seriously test Lukasz Fabianski and have been sloppy when it counts with poor choices and poor final balls.
  70. Graham Potter will be content with the opening 45 minutes, especially have only taken training at West Ham for the first time yesterday.

  3. Graham Potter’s impact has been impressive. Lucas Paqueta has played well, too.

  13. What’s left? I always end up with loads of crackers way after the cheese is gone.

  40. This stop-startey game is not helping Villa out at all.
  41. They have half a chance but Youri Tielemans overhits a forward pass.

  63. Aston Villa 0-1 West Ham
  64. Another shot, and unsurprisingly it comes from Lucas Paqueta who has easily been this game’s brightest.

  4. This time around both players are able to continue.
  5. But on this cold, cold night, both teams are seeming to struggle.
  6. Wycombe 2-0 Portsmouth
  7. That’s the end of the first half in this one. It’s been a good opening 45 from Wycombe, put a poor display from the visitors.
  8. Portsmouth started well but quickly tailed off and didn’t manage to find any way back into contention.
  9. It’s been sloppy in defence from Pompey and lacklustre up top. Wycombe are comfortable and cruising.

  22. The cross isn’t bad, but it hits a load of bodies.
  23. As Edson Alvarez goes in Tyrone Mings just does enough to force the shot over the bar.
  24. Wycombe 2-0 Portsmouth

  41. We’ve hardly played any football over the last 10 minutes. Now Aston Villa’s Leon Bailey stays down after getting caught by Lucas Paqueta.
  42. He will be OK to continue. In fact, he’s now back on his feet now.
  43. Wycombe 2-0 Portsmouth
  44. The Portsmouth fans aren’t impressed with this. We’ve just had the “we’ve had a shot” chant brought out by the travelling supporters.

  47. Portsmouth aren’t letting this one go and have seen the momentum swing in their favour, but things aren’t coming off in the final third.

  46. A beautiful finish.
  47. Wycombe 1-0 Portsmouth
  48. Portsmouth are still enjoying plenty of the ball and are probably on top, but Wycombe are making some good moves in the final third.
  49. Gideon Kodua – who set up the hosts’ opener – is proving a real handful.
  50. Lucas Paqueta (nine mins)

  31. Former Brighton striker Glenn Murray on the playing style of Graham Potter: “He’s not rigid. He’s not stuck in a system or a style. He’s very fluid, and I think we even see that in-game. When I played under him, we would change formations two or three times in a single afternoon, which is quite a skill to be able to have your players understand everything you want from them and be able to change in-game.
  32. “I mean, these changes weren’t made at half time. He wasn’t exactly sitting everyone down. It was an instruction from the sideline, and, lo and behold! We all knew our jobs, and how to change that style in-game, which I think is credit to his managerial capabilities.
  33. “Graham is a very thought-provoking manager. He knows exactly what he wants, but he wants feedback from the players. It’s a collective rather than a dictatorship. And he will meticulously study each and every opponent, and he will best plan the way to try and penetrate that opponent, to try and hurt that opponent, and obviously win games at the end of the week.”

  33. Former Aston Villa striker on BBC Radio 5 Live
  34. Graham Potter has waited for the right job.
  35. He has a lot of quality to work with, but he hasn’t had a lot of time and he has come to a difficult place to get a win.
  36. I like Potter as a coach – let’s see how he goes.
  37. Thanks Anon.
  38. Now, I’m the last person who should be querying people’s grammar – just check the BBC complaints folder – but, am I the only one reading that thinking Anon is saying he was actually on the muddy pitch at Villa Park playing?
  39. Have we got an ex-pro first-time texter? No? Just me?

  41. Not a commemorative kit, but memorable – Coventry City’s brown away kit from the 70s or 80s. Played them on a muddy pitch at Villa park under floodlights and could only see the sponsors white Ts on the front of the shirt moving around!
  42. Wycombe v Portsmouth (19:45 GMT)
  43. Both managers opt to make a number of switches to their teams tonight.
  44. Wycombe boss Matt Bloomfield makes six changes to the side who lost 1-0 against Huddersfield in the league on Wednesday.
  45. Wycombe Wanderers XI: George, Harvie, Butcher, Leahy, McCleary, Bakinson, Hanlan, Kodua, Skura, Bradley, Lubala.
  46. Subs: Bishop, Scowen, Wheeler, Vokes, Udoh, Humphreys, Kone, Onyedinma, Hagelskjaer.
  47. There are even more changes for Portsmouth. They make nine alterations to the team who were beaten by Sunderland at the weekend.
  48. Portsmouth XI: Archer, Williams, Potts, Saydee, McIntyre, Moxon, Devlin, Kamara, Ritchie, Lane, Atkinson.
  49. Subs: Schmid, Swanson, Towler, Ogilvie, Dozzell, Ani, Clout, Singerr, Bishop.
  50. It’s not just Aston Villa and West Ham in action tonight though.
  51. League One Wycombe are hosting Championship Portsmouth. Let’s get some team news…
  52. Genuinely think the Saturday of the third round of the FA Cup is my favourite day of the year as a football fan.
  53. So many storylines happening, all overlapping each other. I can’t wait for tomorrow.
  54. The final day of the Championship season is usually class too. Also full of chaos.

  56. The FA Cup third round is one of the most savoured periods in the English football calendar.
  57. It’s when the 44 Premier League and Championship clubs enter the competition, joining the 20 lower-league and non-league clubs who made it through last month’s second round.
  58. Matches are spread across five days, with games running from Thursday through until Monday.
  59. Here’s your guide on how to follow all of the action.
  60. And, of course, any chat on Graham Potter or West Ham in general is always welcome.
  61. Be warned though if you want to make any Harry Potter puns. We’ve heard them all by now. The bar is very high!

What’s your favourite anniversary/special edition kit?

Or least favourite…

I’ll load up the BBC photo archives. This should make a fun Get Involved.

Aston Villa v West Ham (20:00 GMT)

Aston Villa ain’t playing in their usual colours this evening.

Instead, they’re opting for this black kit to commemorate the 150th anniversary of their first recorded match.

These were the colours before their famous claret and blue.

Looks pretty smart.

Graham Potter is back in management.

Yesterday the 49-year-old signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with the London club, who sacked Julen Lopetegui on Wednesday after six months in charge.

It is his first managerial position since being dismissed by Chelsea in April 2023.

Two more FA Cup third round matches to bring you tonight.

Now, usually two teams in the top flight drawing each other in an earlier round of the cups isn’t too exciting.

But tonight, with Aston Villa and West Ham, we’ve got so many storylines we’ve decided to start our live text a little bit earlier just to fit them all in.

Enjoy it!
