WASHINGTON (TNND) — White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt refused to mince words when addressing a journalist during her weekly news briefing Monday.
The journalist, who was CNN’s Kaitlan Collins, asked Leavitt about one of President Donald Trump’s latest Truth Social posts.
Collins wanted to know whether the White House had any evidence for Trump’s recent claim that pardons previously signed by former President Joe Biden were actually inked by an autopen, which are used to sign documents without a physical signature.
Leavitt replied with a straight-forward remark.
You’re the reporter,” she said. “You should find out.”
The journalist’s inquiry stemmed from Trump’s social media post earlier on Monday. Trump said the pardons are now “void, vacant and of no further force or effect.”
The implication was that Biden wasn’t cognitively sound to sign the pardons, let alone make any decisions.
“The ‘Pardons’ that Sleepy Joe Biden gave to the Unselect Committee of Political Thugs, and many others, are hereby declared VOID, VACANT, AND OF NO FURTHER FORCE OR EFFECT, because of the fact that they were done by Autopen,” Trump wrote in post Sunday morning.
“In other words, Joe Biden did not sign them but, more importantly, he did not know anything about them! The necessary Pardoning Documents were not explained to, or approved by, Biden. He knew nothing about them, and the people that did may have committed a crime. Therefore, those on the Unselect Committee, who destroyed and deleted ALL evidence obtained during their two year Witch Hunt of me, and many other innocent people, should fully understand that they are subject to investigation at the highest level. The fact is, they were probably responsible for the Documents that were signed on their behalf without the knowledge or consent of the Worst President in the History of our Country, Crooked Joe Biden!”
In a separate post Trump shared Monday, the president said the U.S. “probably” was better off if an autopen was implemented.
During the briefing, Leavitt went on to say she feels there is no doubt Biden was fully aware of what he was doing — or saying — during the tail end of his term. That includes signing pardons.
The president was begging the question that I think a lot of journalists in this room should be asking about whether or not the former president of the United States — who I think we can all finally agree was cognitively impaired. I know it took people some time to finally admit that, but we all know that to be true as evidenced by his disastrous debate performance against President Trump during the campaign. I digress on that. — But the president was raising the (question of whether Biden knew) about these pardons? Was his legal signature used without his consent or knowledge? And that’s not just the president or me raising those questions, Kaitlan,” Leavitt said.
Leavitt went on to cite The New York Post, as the media outlet recently reported former Biden staffers “wondered” if Biden was consulted about wither signing the pardons or approving
“I think it’s a question that everybody in this room should be looking into because, certainly, that would propose, perhaps, criminal or illegal behavior if staff members were signing the president of the United States’ autograph without consent,” Leavitt said.
Leavitt also told Collins to ask Biden’s former staffers if Biden did, in fact, sign his own name.
Collins later took to X to address the exchange. She also noted Trump said “he’s only ever used the autopen for ‘very important matters.'”
