COVINGTON COUNTY, Miss. (WDAM) – A super storm cell spawned two suspected tornados that struck Covington County Saturday afternoon and killed one and injured several, including one person seriously,
Covington County Emergency Management Agency Director said in a release that the county had been struck by two separate torndoes in two, different areas of the county.
Chancellor said the county had been struck by two tornadoes.
The first hit the Hot Coffee community in northeast Covington County, Chancellor said. The suspected tornado took down several trees and power lines, while damaging multiple structures and causing minor injuries.
The second tornado proved deadly, striking Seminary and accounting for a death and a major injury.
Covington County Coroner Chris Daquila confirmed the Saturday afternoon death.
“Yes, I can confirm one, storm-related death.” Daquila said. “At this point, we’re not giving names until family is notified.”
The strike second strike also caused “several” minor injuries as well as downing more power lines and trees, Chancellor said.
Chancellor said he expected debris removal to be completed by nightfall Saturday, thanks to the cooperation and efforts of volunteer fire departments first responders, law enforcement officers and deputies, emergency medical technicians, emergency management personnel, county road crews, dispatchers and residents.
By nightfall, more than 20 percent of Covington County’s power customers were still without electricity, including 1,893 with Southern Pine Electric, 86 with Mississippi Power and 16 with Pearl Rover Valley Electric Power Association.
Chancellor said official damage assessments would begin early in the next week.
