It’s the end of an era. After getting rid of rewards points for some tickets and ending open seating, Southwest Airlines, known for its “bags fly free” policy, is ending the longstanding perk.
Customers who purchase flights on or after May 28 will be charged a fee for first and second checked bags. Only Southwest Rapid Rewards A-List Preferred Members and Business Select fare passengers will receive two free checked bags, according to the company’s news release.
“We have tremendous opportunity to meet current and future customer needs, attract new customer segments we don’t compete for today, and return to the levels of profitability that both we and our shareholders expect,” said Southwest Airlines CEO Bob Jordan. The carrier is shifting to a focus on its most loyal customers.
