Tornado warning in Volusia as severe weather crosses Central Florida

Severe weather moving across the state prompted the National Weather Service to issue tornado warnings in Lake, Orange, Seminole and Volusia counties.

The latest had a confirmed tornado spotted in Lake Mary and Sanford with the NWS extending the warning for Seminole and Volusia counties until 10:45 a.m.

By 10:30, the warning was limited to east Volusia County.

A confirmed tornado was located over Lake Mary at 9:42 a.m. moving northeast at 30 mph. The alert was updated to say a confirmed tornado was located over Sanford, moving northeast at 45 mph at 9:50 a.m.

“Flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without shelter. Mobile homes will be damaged or destroyed. Damage to roofs, windows, and vehicles will occur. Tree damage is likely,” reads the alert from NWS Melbourne.

By 9:55, the storm cell was located over Osteen and near Deltona moving northeast at 30 mph expected to be near New Smyrna Beach around 10:10 a.m. and Port Orange and Edgewater by 10:30 a.m.

“To repeat, a tornado is on the ground. TAKE COVER NOW! Move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building. Avoid windows. If you are outdoors, in a mobile home, or in a vehicle, move to the closest substantial shelter and protect yourself from flying debris,” the alert stated.

The same system moved over Clermont, Tavares, Mount Dora, Zellwood, Apopka and Plymouth with the first warning issued around 8:30 a.m. and subsequent warnings that lasted until 9:30 a.m.

The severe weather piled on what was already a wet start Monday with showers and storms arriving ahead of a cold front.

Rain chances are around 70-80 percent, according to NWS Melbourne.

Strong to isolated severe storms will be possible, with wind gusts from 40-60 mph being the main threats.

A wind advisory for all of east Central Florida is in effect from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Other threats include small hail, lightning strikes and heavy downpours.

There is a tornado threat, according to NWS Melbourne.

Boating conditions will be dangerous.

Temperatures will range from the 70s in the northern parts of Central Florida to the 80s in the southern parts.
