Hold the excitement—DK Metcalf trade doesn’t fix Steelers’ biggest offensive problem

Sorry, Steelers fans, although the DK Metcalf trade is a massive first step to fixing the Black and Gold offense, an even bigger problem remains unsolved—who will be the 2025 starting QB?

Justin Fields is the preferred starter

The Pittsburgh Steelers have apparently made their interests pretty clear over the past several weeks—they want Justin Fields as the starting quarterback for the 2025 regular season. However, Fields clearly didn’t appreciate having the rug pulled out from under him after his impressive 4-2 start to the 2024 season and likely is seeking more incentive to remain with the Steel City after they screwed him over. Fields may have realistically played his last snap in Black and Gold.

Will Russell Wilson remain?

The black sheep of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 2024 campaign, ‘Mr. Unlimited’ himself, Russell Wilson, was more often than not blamed for the entirety of the offensive struggles surrounding the team at the end of last season. After being thrown under the metaphorical ‘Jerome Bettis Bus’—and having it backed over him a few hundred times to start this offseason—there is little chance that Wilson returns to Pittsburgh with a smile on his face—despite his infectious optimism.

With that in mind, it could be more realistic that the Pittsburgh Steelers find the future of their QB room in free agency, such as Vikings QB Sam Darnold, who had an incredible bounce-back 2024 season.
