Pittsburgh Steelers make NFL history with massive DK Metcalf contract

The Pittsburgh Steelers made a bit of NFL history with the DK Metcalf contract. His five-year, $150 million deal is the largest gross amount of money towards a wide receiver in NFL history. Metcalf becomes the fifth-highest-paid wide receiver on average per year with the deal.

The Steelers just handed out the largest contract in team history with the deal. Technically, since Metcalf was not a free agent, that record still belongs to Patrick Queen’s three-year, $41 million deal from last year. Though, if you were to just count outside additions, Metcalf would be the franchise record.

Pittsburgh went on an odyssey to try to land a wide receiver over the last year. The Brandon Aiyuk saga was the most public of all of those, and when they ended up whiffing, the Steelers were stuck with who they had. Even a trade deadline addition in Mike Williams could not change much.

Metcalf is an explosive playmaker who led the NFL in 20 or more yards receptions in 2024. He has a skill set similar to the team’s other standout wide receiver, George Pickens, but the two-time Pro Bowler adds a dynamic element to an offense that badly needs talent.

Metcalf is the first huge contract the Steelers have shelled out on offense in a bit, but the investment towards the offensive side of the ball is starting to flip a bit. That started with paying Pat Freiermuth last offseason, and it certainly seems that way again with Metcalf getting a franchise-altering deal.
