MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) – (5:00 AM.) The Minnesota Department of Transportation has closed many state highways and a portion of Interstate 90 in South Central Minnesota due to strong winds creating blowing and drifting snow, significantly reducing visibility.
Roads closed:
- Interstate 90 from Luverne to Blue Earth
- Westbound I-90 from Luverne to the South Dakota border will remain open
- Highway 60 from Iowa to Mankato
- Highway 91 from Iowa to the Murray County line
- Highway 59 from Iowa to Fulda
- Highway 264
- Highway 30 from the Murray County line to Highway 4
- Highway 4 from Iowa to Highway 30
- Highway 15 from Iowa to Madelia
The road closures are expected to remain overnight and until conditions improve on Wednesday. MnDOT reminds motorists that it is illegal to travel on a closed road and if a motorist requires rescuing, they are liable for all related rescue costs.
Additional road closures or travel advisories are possible as conditions are expected to further deteriorate overnight.
No travel advised:
A no travel advisory has been issued on several state highways and I-90 in the following counties: Freeborn, Faribault, Blue Earth, Brown, Waseca, Nicollet, Le Sueur, Rock, and Sibley.
No travel advised means that the roadway has deteriorated and/or visibility has been reduced to the point that it is very dangerous to travel; there are reports of whiteout conditions; and some weather conditions can be severe enough that road treatments are not effective, and conditions can become life-threatening for stranded travelers.

(7:00 p.m.) The Minnesota Department of Transportation advises no travel on several state highways and Interstate 90 in south central Minnesota due to strong winds causing blowing snow and limiting visibility.
The no travel advisory includes several state highways and I-90 in the following counties: Jackson, Cottonwood, and Nobles. Some state highways in portions of Martin and Watonwan counties in South Central Minnesota have been added to the list of state highways that are under a no travel advisory due to strong winds and snow creating reduced visibility. Highways in these counties are snow and slush covered, and slippery.
No travel advised means that the roadway has deteriorated and/or visibility has been reduced to the point that it is very dangerous to travel. Motorists are advised not to travel in these areas until conditions improve.
Additional travel advisories are likely as conditions deteriorate further. Motorists should monitor www.511mn.org for current road conditions and plan accordingly with an emergency supply kit and clothing for extreme cold if they need to travel.
