Millie Bobby Brown has received a public apology from British actor Matt Lucas.

Lucas, 50, spoke out after he seemingly compared the Stranger Things star’s look to that of Little Britain character Vicky Pollard. Last month, Lucas took to X (formerly Twitter) to share a photo of Brown out and about in Los Angeles while wearing a pink zip up, and he added the caption, “no but yeah but” which Pollard is known for saying.

For those unfamiliar, Pollard, who is played by Lucas, is an obnoxious teen who dresses in a hot pink zip-up and wears her blond hair half up and half down, complete with a set of bangs.

It didn’t take long for the media to pick up Lucas’ comment, with the Daily Mail claiming that he took a “savage swipe” at Brown, 21. On Monday, March 3, Lucas took to Instagram to explain his comment and to say that he was sorry.

He explained that Pollard, “who had blonde hair and always wore a pink top,” reminded him of Brown’s look at the premiere, which is why he made the comment. He insisted that the comparison wasn’t meant to be a dig.

“I thought you looked terrific and I was mortified when the press wrote that I ‘slammed’ you, firstly because that’s not my style, and secondly because I think you’re brilliant. I would not have posted it if I had thought it would have upset you but I realise it has and for that I apologise,” he wrote.

Lucas’ post comes on the heels of Brown speaking out about people criticizing her look. Hours before Lucas apologized, Brown shared a candid video on her Instagram account in which she addressed the negative media attention she’s received lately.

“Disillusioned people can’t handle seeing a girl become a woman on her terms, not theirs. I refuse to apologize for growing up. I refuse to make myself smaller to fit the unrealistic expectations of people who can’t handle seeing a girl become a woman. I will not be shamed for how I look, how I dress, or how I present myself,” Brown said.

In her post, Brown called out the Daily Mail for the article about what Lucas had written. Lucas has turned the comments off on his Instagram apology.
