Anthony Edwards given 1-game suspension after earning 16th technical foul

Anthony Edwards has been suspended one game by the NBA for picking up his 16th technical foul of the season during Thursday night’s loss to the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Minnesota Timberwolves star was ejected Thursday via a double technical foul and surpassed 16 technical fouls this season.

“Under NBA rules, a player or coach is automatically suspended without pay for one game once he receives his 16th technical foul during a regular season,” read a statement from NBA Executive Vice President and Head of Basketball Operations Joe Dumars. “For every two additional technical fouls received during that regular season, the player or coach will be automatically suspended without pay for an additional game.”

Edwards not only was ejected, but also lingered on the court and threw the ball into the Crypto.com Arena crowd. He had been incensed by a non-call midway through the third quarter.

No punishment has been announced by the NBA for the ball toss.

It was the third ejection of Edwards’ career.

Edwards was ejected from a game in which his team could have certainly used him. He left with 18 points, six rebounds, five assists and zero turnovers, while none of his teammates had scored more than 10 points. The Lakers led 74-59 at the time.

The Timberwolves remained competitive into the fourth quarter, at one point cutting the Lakers’ lead to three points, but L.A. ended up getting the 111-102 win.

Edwards will miss Friday’s game against the Utah Jazz.

Edwards has been shouldering a larger load than ever for the Timberwolves this season, averaging career highs in points, rebounds, turnovers and minutes per game, while also posting a career-high .535 effective field-goal percentage.
