Up to 9 inches of snow is expected to hit Milwaukee on Wednesday, followed by more snow over the weekend.
Milwaukee-Sullivan National Weather Service meteorologist Aidan Kuroski said the city could see an additional 3 to 6 inches of snow Friday afternoon into Saturday, though that forecast could change.
“It’s still quite a bit uncertain for the weekend, and a lot of it will be determined after this system comes through on Wednesday,” Kuroski said. “The Wednesday one is looking better and better for the Milwaukee area to see in the neighborhood of 5 to 9 inches of snow, with quite a bit of lake enhancement potential.”
The weather service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Waukesha, Washington, Sheboygan, Racine and Kenosha counties. The warning is in effect from noon Wednesday to 3 a.m. Thursday. Higher snow totals are expected in the southeastern portion of the region, closest to Lake Michigan.
In Milwaukee, snowfall is in the forecast from 6 a.m. Wednesday to 5 a.m. Thursday, with chances highest between 9 a.m. and 11 p.m. on Wednesday. The heaviest snowfall is expected in the afternoon and evening. The weather service says snow rates along the Lake Michigan shoreline may reach up to 1 inch per hour at times.
Milwaukee-Sullivan NWS meteorologist Mark Gehring said the snow “absolutely will impact” the Wednesday evening commute in Milwaukee. NWS encourages people to keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in their vehicles in case of an emergency if they must travel. The agency recommends keeping up to date with the latest road conditions by calling 511 or visiting 511wi.gov.
“I would expect you’re going to have snow-covered roads, slick conditions,” Gehring said. “It is going to be cold enough for the snow to easily stick.”
A high of 26 degrees is in the forecast for Wednesday afternoon, with wind chills in the mid-teens. Temperatures will drop to around 14 degrees early Thursday morning, with wind chills around 0 degrees.
