Kevin Huerter, who was in the Capital Region this past week for a ceremony to retire his Shenendehowa High School jersey, has a new NBA team.

The Chicago Bulls agreed to acquire the 6-foot-7 guard Sunday evening as part of a three-team deal centered around sending De’Aaron Fox from the Sacramento Kings to the San Antonio Spurs and Zach LaVine from the Bulls to the Kings, according to multiple reports.

The Bulls are Huerter’s third NBA team. He played four seasons with the Atlanta Hawks after they drafted him No. 19 overall in the 2018 NBA draft, then was traded to the Kings during the offseason prior to the 2022-23 season.

Huerter, 26, was a starter for his first six NBA seasons. This season, he mostly came off the bench for the Kings, and is averaging a career-low 7.9 points in 20.9 minutes per game. For his career, Huerter has averaged 11.5 points per game.

In moving from the Kings to the Bulls, Huerter stayed with a team in the postseason hunt. The Kings are No. 10 in the Western Conference standings, while the Bulls are No. 10 in the Eastern Conference. Chicago’s next game is Tuesday against the Miami Heat.

A 2016 Shenendehowa graduate, Huerter led the school’s boys’ basketball team to a Class AA state championship in 2015 and to the state semifinals the next year. Huerter won the state’s Mr. Basketball honors as a senior, then played two seasons at the University of Maryland before heading to the NBA. When he was with the Hawks, Huerter signed a $65 million deal that runs through the 2025-26 season.

With the Kings on the East Coast this past week, Huerter was able to spend this past Tuesday night at Shenendehowa High School where his No. 3 jersey was retired during a ceremony between varsity basketball games between Shenendehowa and Shaker.

“The support here has always been amazing, and sometimes overwhelming,” Huerter said that night.

Huerter teamed with his older brother Thomas, who later played at Siena College, on Shenendehowa’s 2015 state title team. The next year, Huerter was an outfielder on the school’s baseball team that won a state championship.

Like his brother, Huerter’s dad Tom also played at Siena. Both of the NBA player’s younger sisters currently play college basketball, with Meghan at UAlbany and Jillian at Fairfield.
